Hangar Flying / Vortex Generators
« on: February 22, 2006, 10:10:10 AM »
VG's Installed... Ran it down the runway... no noticeable difference. My tech advisor has directed me to the FAA FSDO to discuss a major change... did not realize this going in so if anyone is considering it should know that it is part of the process. I'll update the assigned requirement when I know it.

Drew,

My story  includes landing in the rain and watching the bottem fall out  6' above the runway...makes sense in retrosepct. Pitch down = loss of lift. Loss of Lift = higher stall speed...

I believe this information belongs in some of the "How to Fly Canards" articles... everything that I had read previously about flying in the rain said..."no worries" trim and enjoy it... this is all good except on final approach....

thanks,

Dave

A long time since I posted about this one. I still haven't put on the VG's and I am working up the courage. Can anyone who has installed VG's on the back of the canard comment? I am just a bit nervous.

thanks,

Dave

I have a reservation for one,,, I am waiting to hear that this issue is resolved before I plunk down the rest of the green-backs. Please let me know how it goes.

Hangar Flying / IFR Advice

William,

Thanks for your reply. my intention for "faking it" with gps in terms of using it as I would an ADF or DME would only be for training pruposes with a safety pilot (instructor) in the back. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

Dave

I am currently dedicating a lot of my non-committed time to study for the IFR and would love advice from anyone who has tackled this body of information and flys IFR in a canard.

I wonder if I can train in my Long? I do have an ILS but no ADF of DME...but it seems like I could fake that with my GPS.

Thanks,

Dave

Hangar Flying / Handheld Transciever opinions?
« on: January 05, 2006, 05:15:02 PM »
I have an older hand held from Sportys. The new one has a " Last Channel" Button. And decent Nav function as well.

Don't buy a scanner when you could by a transceiver that will be a great lost electrical back-up for many many years of your flying. Buy the adapter so that you can plug straight into your headset. I used mine 2 days ago when I found that I left my master switch on in my c-140 and could not get a charge going even after flying for a while. Great to have. Also used mine once when my push-to-talk button crapped flying across the Canada - US boarder.... a good time to have comm.

I say buy one. If you are renting a plane that charges by hobbs and the hobbs runs off the master...then you will be charged for listening to Atis. This can save you some $'s by listening in prior to starting your $ siphon.

As far as a head set the best inexpensive one that I know if is made by lightspeed. I have the qfr it was about $135 on sale. It think it has the highest passive noise reduction out there. I don't have a burning desire for noise cancellation... someday it will probably happen.

Have fun and get in the air as soon as possible.

The protester of truth has clearly lost this round of the discussion.
