Hangar Flying / Moving to Orlando FL
« on: April 01, 2006, 05:57:26 PM »
Greetings Gang,

I just wanted to let those of you who are in the Central Florida area that I will be moving down there next week.  I recently accepted a position with a company based in Longwood.  I’m going to be based at the Orlando Sanford Airport. (http://www.airnav.com/airport/sfb) and right next door to Simon Ramirez.  I should be in the area late in the week and expect to DRIVE over to Sun N Fun.  I’m leaving the BerkEz in Atlantic City for a little while although she has been flying very well for the past few weeks.  It really is an awesome airplane thanks to Oertel.  Anyway, that’s all for now.  :D

Hangar Flying / VariEze on Ebay # 4599234526
« on: December 23, 2005, 10:29:42 AM »
I was just browsing Ebay and found a varieze up for sale.  It has two bids on it at this time but the auction description concerns me.  The numbers that the seller quotes for performance are numbers close to what klaus might post for his plane.  I did send the seller an email through ebay asking him/her? about those numbers and I could be wrong about all of it.  I suppose my problem (if I'm right) is that putting the plane up on ebay allows anyone to bid on it which means that the seller isn't all that concerned about who it goes to. Worse yet, the potential buyer could be getting into something that isn't nearly what the auction states.  Like I said, I could be SO WRONG but I doubt that I am.

Here's the jist of the data supplied:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4599234526
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1978 varieze with a lycoming 0-235 L2C engine.
airframe 240 hrs.
engine TT 1160 hrs.
Slick mags
new battery
speed brake
climb prop.

Top Speed -- 220 mph
Cruise -- 190 mph
Range, s.m. -- 1000
Stall, mph -- 55
Takeoff Distance, ft. -- 750
Landing Distance, ft. -- 1000
Engine Used -- Lyc. 0-235 L2C --
HP Range -- 118
Fuel Capacity, gal. -- 29
Empty Weight, lbs. -- 620
Gross Weight, lbs. -- 1250.
Instruments:
Airspeed,
Altimeter,
Turn Coordinator
Compass
RPM Gauge
Exhaust Temperature
Oil Temperature
Oil Pressure,
Nav/Com Radio
Hobbs Meter.
Trim systems are Yaw, Pitch and Roll.
The aircraft fuel burn at cruise is 6 gals. an hr. and uses 100 LL.

------------------------------------------------------------
Top Speed 220 MPH?  With a climb prop?
TO Distance 750 feet?  Under normal conditions?
CRUISE @ 190 MPH? With a climb prop?
IF and that's a BIG IF the airplane will cruise at 190 MPH, the seller states that he can hold 29 gallons of gas.  That's 4.83 hours total endurance minus the 30 minute reserve brings endurance down to 4.3 hours.  4.3 hours at 190MPH (ugg) is 817 SM range.  That's at 6 GPH.  All of those numbers with slick mags no electronic ignition, no mention of a ram air system or 4 pipe exhaust.  No speed mods noted but a pretty light weight plane.

It's not that I'm trying to discredit the seller or his airplane.  My problem is that I think those performance numbers are probably inaccurate and that's a bad thing.  I just sold my VariEze to a guy at Langley AFB and he knew EXACTLY what he was getting into.  Everything was disclosed to all potential buyers including the little quirks that the plane has.  This plane still has wing cuffs on it, no vortions, no fences...  It just doesn't add up.

So If I'm wrong about this, I'll be the first to say that I'm very sorry for posting this message but If I'm correct in my assumptions, then I would hope the seller would correct the description of the airplane and make sure people know what they are getting into.  I feel that we have a responsibilty to be honest and also somewhat selective whith people when we are selling our planes.  There were a number of guys that made offers on my plane and I simply told them that I would not sell it to them for one reason or another.  One guy that had just received his PPL wanted to come and pick up the plane; his first flight was going to be back out to Arizona with the plane.  Another guy was going to keep the plane on a costal airport in North Carilina but not in a hangar.  I warned him against doing that with a canard even though I know there are canards that live outside - not my baby.  Take it for what it's worth, sorry for the long post it just annoyed me quite allot.

Hangar Flying / Glass Overcast Registration
« on: June 19, 2005, 12:24:26 PM »
For those of you having trouble with the web site registration.  Please try this html version of the registration form.
http://www.glassovercast.com/goc/osh30reg.htm

A quick note for the cruise speeds we're seeing.  We're not looking for top speed or inflated speeds.  We really need to know what speed in KTS that you are comfortable cruising your airplane.  The flight profile will be based on the slowest cruise speeds.

Hangar Flying / Glass Overcast is happening.
« on: June 16, 2005, 07:19:35 PM »
Hello Team,

The 30th Anniversary Mass Arrival into Oshkosh is actually coming together. In fact, the official Letter of agreement came in from the FAA just yesterday. I don’t want to get into minute details here as those pesky things are changing every few hours but here’s the very basic scoop:
The official website is now up and running BUT will be changing very often along with the plan.

http://www.GlassOvercast.com

The web site is flash based but I’ll be posting a regular HTML version to allow for most viewers.

The official registration will be handled through the web site too.
This mass arrival will NOT conflict with the AirVenture Cup Race. In fact the same person is the Chairman of both events.

ALL CANARD AIRCRAFT are invited to participate.
ALL RUTAN DESIGNS are invited to participate.

If you want to participate and aren’t sure if you fall into one of those two categories, register anyway.

Please register as soon as possible even if it is tentative. We are trying to get a feel for numbers, types and performance information.

If you want to practice something prior to the event, you should practice following a plane in about 5 second trail without getting into his wake. Practice flying base to final at 500AGL in the event we have to use Rwy 18 at OSH. That will be the most difficult approach to handle with this crowd. Practice keeping one eye on your airspeed, and one eye on your leader. Practice landing as close to the numbers as possible but keeping your speed up until the end of the runway. Those are the basic skills that you will probably encounter in this flight.

Ok, the plan for the moment is this:
We will stage out of Madison, WI (KMSN) on July 25th, 2005
Madison is a Class C airport so normal approach procedures should be used. Notify them that you are in for the Glass Overcast.
Parking will be on the East Ramp at Wisconsin Aviation.

Briefing Time is 12:00L (High Noon)

We will launch in pairs out of MSN splitting the runway with plenty of sacing (not close formation take offs).

Climb will be at a TBD speed based on registration entries that we receive.

Cruise Speed will be based on the same data.

Cruise Altitude will depend on the winds at OSH and the approach we use.

In other words, if we have to fly near Rippon, we will do our best to deconflict with that traffic.

Landing at OSH will be on both Left and Right runways (36R is the taxiway while 18L is the taxiway). If you take off on the left side of the runway at MSN, you land on 36L at OSH. If you take off on the right side of the runway at MSN you land on 36R at OSH. There will be NO formation landings at OSH.

The FAA and EAA have approved four separate arrivals into OSH. One to 36, one to 18, one to 27 and one to 09. At the moment we are hoping to have approval to over fly 09-27 in the event we use RWY 18 at OSH.
Each of the approaches will be posted on the website complete with all the information that you will need to fly it even though you will be following the guy in front of you.
The only approach that is currently IN STONE (for the moment) is the Approach to 36 at OSH. The other three are still being worked out with the FAA.

We will keep radio chatter to an absolute minimum. The lead and tail aircraft will be the only two using the radio. You should not expect to be making any radio calls.

Emergency Procedures are also posted on the web site.
The arrival into OSH will be planned for 15:00L on the 25th. We are doing our very best to arrive just ahead of the White Knight/SS1.

The staging location of WK/SS1 is irrelevant to this event so if you know where it is, keep it to yourself please. ;) The folks from Scaled do not need any distractions and we have to do our very best to follow their wishes.

There are a number of airports that have been designated as alternates for emergencies; those airports are listed in each respective flight plan found on the web site.

There are some documents that you will need to show upon your arrival at MSN. These are also listed on the web site but it’s nothing more than what you would need if you were ramp checked.
There will be a briefing waiver that each pilot must sign upon check in at MSN. We will be flying into wavered airspace as we are the opening act of the AirShow, each aircrew MUST sign that waiver.

If you have any questions that are NOT detail oriented, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you want to know what freqs we’ll be using please hold those questions as we don’t have every little detail cleaned up yet. I would recommend you check the website often as changes will be posted there as I receive them.

My cell phone number is posted in the fine print on the registration page of the web site. I don’t want to post that here on the Yahoo Group.
Like I said, very basic info here, but I wanted to get the word out that it’s rolling forward.

Hangar Flying / NJ Fly In. Formation School
« on: January 05, 2005, 05:57:27 PM »
Yes sports fans, that's right.  We are having a bit of a fly in right here in what should be the frozen North East.
Of course, the temps have been holding in the mid 50s and are forecasted to stay in that range.  Most of this
message is old news but if you're not doing anything the weekend after this one coming, and you like flying
in formation with other airplanes - read on!

This is a semi semi last call for registrations for our formation school which
will be held in (brrrrr) Millville NJ on the 15th of January.  I say
"semi semi last call" since we are cutting off registration at 100 people and I
already put out the "semi last call".  We now have 81 people signed up but at
the moment but only 8 canard drivers total.

I could go into heavy details here but all the important information
can be found at
www.VultureFormation.com

I know that some of you have already registered, and some have
emailed me directly saying "count me in" etc.  But please if you are
interested, please do go to the web site and register there as it helps us plan all
the logistics according to the data we collect. :)

Oh, by the way.. this fly in is FREE FREE FREE and we have DOOR PRIZES! :)

MARC! KEN! Where are you guys?
