Hangar Flying / Re: Rough River 2009
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:22:40 AM »
I echo your thoughts Bill.

As someone who is trying to learn all I can about these planes, RR is a must.  Plus, its just dang fun.  Its important for the community to be open to folks like me and Bruce as we try to suck information out of the guys who have been there and done that.  Fortunately I was able to meet several folks this year who I can bend their ear and ask for advice.  I know the questions I ask are stupid sometimes, and that they've been asked by many before me, but the openess and patience most show when answering is noteworthy.  For that I am very thankful.

RR is now a planned trip at my house.

Hangar Flying / Header Wrap
« on: October 02, 2009, 10:28:24 AM »
I don't see too many EZ's with header wrap.  Its designed to lower the temp of the header, which I would think would help with CHT cooling.  Anyone know why we don't see more EZ's using it?  Other than weight of course :)

Hangar Flying / Re: what's the deal with varieze wing cuffs?
« on: August 31, 2009, 01:49:18 PM »
Thanks Bill,

I'm considering purchase of a Varieze and the more I learn the more I realize there's alot I don't know.  Complicating things is that no 2 EZES are alike.  Thankfully I have some respected builders advising me that are a big help.   I value your comments and experience with the VE.

So am I understanding your comment correctly?  Are the vortilons a replacement to the cuffs or are they both advised?  I'm figuring hypothetical CG's via the info from the POH, and without cuffs I'm in the danger zone.

Also, what's your opinion on a drop dead max. empty weight that's safe?  I know what the POH says.  ;)  Thanks again!

Hangar Flying / what's the deal with varieze wing cuffs?
« on: August 30, 2009, 06:58:00 PM »
I see some Varieze's with wing cuffs, but notice that most do not have them.  The POH puts aft CG limitations with planes that do not have them.  Since most folks don't seem to have wing cuffs, is it not a big deal?

Hangar Flying / Re: Flying Expenses Per Year

Good point.  Hangar rent varies wildly around here and throughout the country (if you can find one).  Let's leave hangar rent out of it since its such a variable number.

Hangar Flying / Flying Expenses Per Year
« on: June 06, 2009, 06:01:34 PM »
I am working up a budget for myself and the purchase of a Varieze/Long EZ.  Was curious what your actual flying expenses have been per year.  Please let me know if you are including fuel and hangar in your number.  Please do not take into account overhauls/major repairs etc.  Just the normal operating and maintenance expenses for your bird.

I know my actual number will vary wildly when considering aircraft age, maintenance needed etc.  I just want to get a good idea.  Thanks for your input.

Hangar Flying / what runway length do you operate from?
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:17:41 PM »
can you tell me what typical runway lengths you operate from?  I've been seeing some long takeoff and landing rolls at Rough River and online, and was wondering what the norm was.  What I've seen doesn't seen to seem to match up with the POH, but that could just be me.

Hangar Flying / Re: Long EZ vs Varieze. What's your take?
« on: March 10, 2009, 03:32:44 PM »
thanks for the great advice guys.  Allen I'm at the point where you were some time ago.  Struggling on the decision to buy a VE or wait and get a LE and painfully weighing both in my mind.  Factor in there's a share for sale in a really nice Piper Archer II at my home airport, and I'm about to go nuts.

Are there any major differences in flight characteristics and maintenance between the VE and LE?  What about useful load concerns on the VE?

Hangar Flying / Long EZ vs Varieze. What's your take?
« on: March 08, 2009, 07:50:16 PM »
i've spent a lot of time looking for a Varieze, but am starting to wonder if I shouldn't just consider a Long EZ instead.  I am interested in hearing what your preferences are and why.  I appreciate your feedback and helping me make the right decision.

Hangar Flying / Re: Varieze with a Continental 75--What's your thoughts
« on: October 09, 2008, 09:07:13 AM »
thanks for the reply Brett.  My main concern with the 75hp is runway length and the utility (2 people baggage and the ability for a decent fuel load).  Other than the spar caps are there any other fuselage worries when an EZ sits for a long time?

Hangar Flying / Varieze with a Continental 75--What's your thoughts
« on: October 08, 2008, 10:31:21 AM »
I'm a newbie to the EZ's but am learning fast.  What's your take on a Varieze with a 75 hp engine?  How are gross/overgross operations with the C-75?  What would be a good empty weight for a plane with a C-75?  I've read the POH for C-75 and 0-200 comparisons, I'm just curious as to how they stack up in the real world.

Also, how do these planes "sit".  I know its bad for spam cans to sit for an extended period of time, and I was wondering if there were any differences with the EZ's.  One of the planes I have identified has very few hours on it and is around 25 years old.
