I was flying in from Eugene too but turned back about a third of the way between Redding and Columbia.  Some nasty weather out!  I'm trapped in Red Bluff for a bit, I think, and won't be able to make it this year.  Hopefully 2010 will be sunnier!

I was watching Dave last week when he was practicing, and I can vouch that he appeared to be taking a very measured and prudent approach to determining exactly what the parameters for his plane are in a some likely in-pattern emergencies.  I watched as he methodically determined a minimum safe 'return to airport' altitude for engine failure on take off, for instance.  

Based on some recent crashes I've read about where folks augered in because they tried to turn back when they should have just set it down straight ahead, maybe more folks should figure this stuff out before it's an emergency.

But back to Dave, based on what I've seen, I'm confident that he's keeping his head squarely on his shoulders.

Well, that's kinda awkward to answer....  there's an article at http://ez.org/articles.htm called '2000 ways to fly a canard' that happens to cover a lot of the things in the LongEZ system that you need to be aware of, but, um....  it's kinda written by the guy who was selling the canard to the gentleman who started this thread.

Tricky subject.

Check out that link, there are some other very useful articles too that may assist you.

To whomever can edit pages on the site, ez.org/sales.htm seems to have been hijacked with a redirect to a site that attempts to install spyware.  I don't recommend anyone else visit it, it's pretty aggressive.

When I heard "Passive", I immediately began to imagine what "active" would entail.  After a moment of contemplation, I decided that active would be similar to Mode S or primary radar, and not the swarm of protective missiles I had originally imagined.

I'd like to see a serial output on some of these inexpensive PCAS devices.  I imagine something like the Blue Mountain EFIS or equivalent could do wonderful things with that data considering all the screen real-estate and CPU power.

From the folks I've talked to, O-320 seems to be _the_ way to go.  Best yet, you can get roughly O-235 performance/economy by throttling back, so you're not losing those long legs.

I'm not VariEZ expert, but I have read that in addition to less range, the VariEZ also has less usable space/smaller seats.  How big are you and your wife?  How tall?  Those are questions at the heart of the answer to the question you have posed.

I must be missing all the juicy threads you're talking about, afaict, there's the "2000 ways not to buy a canard" thread where people are commiserating with the buyer saying "Dang, that sucks." and the original thread from the seller where people are commiserating with him saying "Dang, that sucks."

If you know of a thread where folks are locked in mortal combat over both sides, do let me know, I'm always looking for an alternative to television for entertainment.

....or just activate the captcha.  It's available in the newer versions of phpBBS, and it's the thing that makes ya type in a sequence of letters during registration that are hard for a machine to read.  Not a 100%, but probably better than the recent spamming.

What's weird to me is how sudden the spam started.  Unless I've been missing it in the past because of an aggressive moderator, it seems like there's just been a sudden wave of spam posts coming out of nowhere.

Based on the recent influx of spam, might I suggest activating user verification for the forums?  I can't recall if the process had a captcha or not, but it might cut down on the unwelcome spam noise.
