one questiuon though, how do you install the new "shaft" into the gear fork?

Tom. There is a roll pin that has to be pressed out or as I did knocked out, Then you need to have the old shaft Pressed out and the new one pressed in.(The guy that did the machine work did mine for me, but some auto part stores may have a press) then you need to drill a new hole for the roll pin. All in the instructions.The shaft is hollow,Isuggest you drill from one side then flip it over and drill from the other side. It keeps the drill from"walking". Bill

The Whiteman builders, particularly Dr. Bob there, says that much of the shimmy in wheels and nose wheel is due to lack of balance in the wheel - a little balancer is available at Go Kart shops and the lead weights are easy to apply in the rim. I'd never heard much of this - but he says smooth rollouts are the very quick and obvious results. As for the main gear, he balances those wheels too, but he also uses the center point of the axle to add weight to the nose of the wheel pant and balances that too - so that it is not tail heavy and driving motion on the gear.
We had a guy with such shimmy that he was shearing the bolt that held the outside of the wheel pant on, on every landing.

After removing the pin, I heated my fork/shaft in the oven and it popped out easily with a few taps. Similarly I heated the fork in the oven & put the new shaft in the freezer and they assembled by gloved hand - no force needed at all. Easy.
Create a drill point centre on the shaft by a few max size drill turns in the roll pin hole, then drill out with a smaller drill & progressively open out the hole to the correct roll pin size. This way you avoid overdrilling the softer ali fork hole & making the roll pin loose. I agree that you do each side separately. :)
