0 290 D2 Inquiry
« on: October 08, 2006, 08:55:55 AM »
Hi
I am re-putting together a Cozy III that is certified.  It was buit in 92 and it has a O 290 GPU motor.  My question is this the flywheel has a large heavy pate of metal around it, can this be removed and what is its purpose.  I think it must weigh 25 lbs.  I think that when this engine was a GPU this served has mometum type action not a strenthen of the flywheel.

Thanks Herb

The 0- 290 gpu uses a crankshaft similar to a 0-235 . You can use a flywheel from a aircraft 0-290,0235 or 0320. The main problem with this gpu crankshaft  is the flange is thin and is prone to cracking. aircraft spruce sells a reinforcment plate to solve this problem.
My guess is that the weight is a harmonic balancer. 25 pound at that location is a bad thing. I f you need any more info on 0290g please feel free to contact me

OK, the heading for your post is for a O-290 D2, In the body of your post you discuss the GPU version, which  is not a D2.  The D2 is a certified engine, the GPU is not. Which one do you have??????
