Title: Shirl Dickey Spar Mod?
Post by: Rotatohead on April 14, 2007, 01:24:23 PM
Hello! Just found a long-ez project on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Long-EZ-Experimental-Aircraft-Kit-Project-Sale-by-Owner_W0QQitemZ160096795557QQihZ006QQcategoryZ26438QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
The seller talks about the Shirl Dickey Spar mod. Could anyone please explain what this is exactly? I'll be putting the infinity retracts on my project and was wondering if that might be something I should use.
Thanks for your help!
Regards, Rotatohead

I believe the ERacer used more plys in the spar layup and I've not heard of anyone doing this on the Long-EZ.
I've also heard others say that this was not advisable on either aircraft. Because making the spar stiffer/beefier only adds weight and does not affect the overall strength of the completed wing.
Since there has NEVER been a spar failure on a Long/Vari/Cozy I doubt you could make a case it was needed.
