I'm trying to get my Garmin 420 to accept the  rs232  alt input  from my Dynon 10A  Instrument.  Has anyone else done this?

I am instaling a Model 10. I was going to couple it to my autopilot, but the the Model 10 does not put out a standard NMEA 0183 signal. I was looking into making a converter, but this has been a low priority for me.  

There is a lot of info in the rs232 packet coming from the 10, but from the limited research I've done on NMEA 0183, it looks like the only thing that could be put in the format is the heading and speed.  

I don't think NMEA 0183 supports stuff like altitude, pitch roll, yaw, etc.  (Its a Marine standard, boat people)

I don't know if the 10A puts out NMEA 0183 or not, I haven't looked into it.

If you have any info, please share it, as this might be a worthwhile project.

One EZ guy that might be of help is Chuck Busch at TrioAvionics.  He is their electronics/software wizzard who has had to figure out all the various data streams from a zillion different GPS units, some standard NMEA, some not, to interface with the EZ Pilot.  The EZ Pilot has a built-in capability to recognize which/what data stream it's getting and self-configure, as I understand it.  I believe that about the only 'modern' setup that the EZ Pilot won't work with is the Any Where Map system because they don't (didn't?) put out some critical piece(s) of data needed by the EZ Pilot (track error???).  The AWM folks were supposed to upgrade their software to do this right almost a year ago, but as of a few months ago (~Dec.) when I last talked to Chuck about this it still hadn't happened.  Chuck said they were more interested in developing real-time weather software than fixing the GPS data stream for the EZ Pilot.  

So, that's about the limit of what I know on this topic, and it's all second hand.

I have the ez-pilot and am trying to use the same rs232 channel in, on the garmin 420 that I am also using to output data to the autopilot.  Maybe only one item can be used on a channel?  the data out to the autopilot works fine, just can't get the altitude data in.

The garmin 400 series can output imformation on ARNAV or northstar format on the rs 232 output #1 and you can input pressure altitude, air data, and fuel data on rs 232 input #1. The dynon has an output protocol #3 which it says is northstar and if it is Aviation version it should work. garmin 400 series does not support NMEA 0183 as it is marine format not aviation.

I finally was able to get the alt info into the  garmin 330 transponderr using the  input on pin 24, the 330 and garmin 420 are interconnected  so that the traffic iinformation can be displayed on the 420 and the alt info also uses this connection to the 420.
