Hangar Flying / Long-EZ Panel .DXF wanted
« on: April 13, 2019, 08:34:48 PM »
Looking for a .DXF file of the plans' Long-EZ panel.  Ancient dead links are all I've found.  Anyone?

Thanks,
Joe

Hangar Flying / West Coast Canard Fly-in Schedule

Not everyone is on Char Spencer's mailing list so here's a web-accessible version of the 2013 fly-in schedule she sent:

Hangar Flying / Flying in SoCal
« on: December 16, 2012, 11:54:40 AM »
Can anyone regularly flying in southern California tell me whether or not there have been any large airspace revisions in the past couple of years?  I'm particularly interested in avoiding the San Diego and Los Angeles airspaces as I will be based at Oceanside (KOKB).

Sure, I could update my portable GPS but Garmin makes that such an expensive P.I.T.A. these days.  Paper charts in the cockpit are not a good option for me.  My Skyview is current but alas, not flying yet :-(

Again, I just want to avoid the San Diego class C and LAX class B airspaces.

Thanks,
Joe

Hangar Flying / Kanab EZ Fly-In Update
« on: September 04, 2010, 02:59:38 PM »
Yesterday after 5 hours of flying in a straight line describing diagonals of Oregon and Nevada, my blond ballast (Harriet) and I arrived at Kanab (KKNB).  (Flight track:http://tinyurl.com/2fs8dg4)

This is what the ramp looked like at about noon today:

More EZ arrived after this was taken including Marc and Deanie Zeitlin, Tom and Myla Jewitt, and a fair number of others whom I did not know.  A fourth row of parking (to the left in the picture) was being used.

Earlier in the day, Jim Price, Rob Martinsen, and Harriet and I flew out to St. George, UT (KSGU) for breakfast.  Flying back to Kanab I noted an O.A.T. of 73F at 8500 MSL.   Perfect weather for lounging around the pool at Aiken's Lodge for the afternoon until pizza and beer this evening.

Tomorrow there's a pancake breakfast on the airport, then the "timed event" (formerly known as "the race" http://www.mail2600.com/Kanab06/index.htm), and then a dinner finale at Nedra's Mex/American restaurant.

Nice way to spend the Labor Day weekend.  Thank you Char and Gary Spencer for organizing things.

Hangar Flying / Cold Weather Flying
« on: February 22, 2010, 03:42:28 PM »
Earlier today I flew my O235 Long-EZ home to Independence, OR from a visit with Jim Price at Sunrise Skypark in southern ID (http://www.runwayfinder.com/?loc=ID40;7S5&view=vfr).  That's about 300 NM of inhospitable terrain (including 10,500' Mt. Jefferson in the Cascade Mountains) with hardly even a decent road for an emergency landing. It's still winter in Idaho and the little Lycoming likes the colder temperatures so I climbed to FL190 to buy myself some more gliding distance.  And while I was at it I wanted to see how my heated seat from http://warmseats.com/ would handle the cold (-6F at altitude) as I have no cabin heat.

It was a non-event.  The aircraft still wanted to climb and FL200 would have been easy although that's higher than I wanted to be with my current oxygen system.  I switched my seat fron high to low heat setting as high was still too hot.  The manifold pressure indicated 14 inches at WOT and with 2700 RPM I estimate 52% power.  My Garmin 196 GPS needed a large contrast adjustment as the LCD screen became dark in the cold.

GU canard, Hertzler propeller, about 30 gallons of fuel, solo, with darn little luggage.  And heated socks, although I didn't bother with them for this trip as I've found regular heavy wool socks and boots are OK for a couple of hours.

Hangar Flying / Kanab Fly-In
« on: August 19, 2009, 05:11:32 PM »
I'm afraid it isn't well-publicized but the Kanab (UT) fly-in (formerly the Kanab R.A.C.E.) will be held in another two weeks (September 6-7 at KKNB).

Anyone going?

Thanks to Char Spencer, I'm posting a flyer for the 2009 HHFC.  The flyer is an announcement of the major canard aircraft flying events in the western US starting with Canards de Mayo and ending with Lone Pine.  Jackpot and Kanab are included.  Questions and comments to Char, please (contact info at end of the flyer).

I'll apologize in advance for the formatting (it loses something in the translation from paper to PDF).

Hangar Flying / Lone Pine (CA) R.A.C.E./Timed Event Lodging
« on: September 26, 2008, 03:24:43 PM »
Reference: http://www.mail2600.com/hhfc08.htm

Anyone interested in sharing a motel room Saturday night at the Lone
Pine event?  I plan to wait until a couple of days before (to scope
out the weather) and then make a reservation.  I'd like to share
expenses with someone who is of similar mind.

Hangar Flying / Arlington and Jackpot
« on: July 20, 2008, 06:43:27 PM »
I haven't seen any reports of the recent Arlington or Jackpot activities so I put together some of my pictures at http://mail2600.com/ArlingtonJackpot2008/.  I'll leave it there until my monthly bandwidth allotment is used up :-)

Hangar Flying / Mojave Bound
« on: June 19, 2008, 12:36:32 PM »
So whom should I expect to see at Mohave this weekend?  The usual suspects from near and far, I presume, but Kelly says 400+ have registered and I don't even know 400 Canardians :-)

We're leaving at first light tomorrow (Friday) and flying formation with Jim Price.  If you're interested in tracking our route of flight you can use these two links:
  http://mail2600.com/position
  http://mail2600.com/track
(They should be updated as soon as we get underway in the morning).

Hangar Flying / Jim Price's Long-EZ Record
« on: March 30, 2008, 12:43:45 PM »
Admittedly, this notice is way too short (unless you live near Boise) but tomorrow (April 3) Jim Price will be speaking at the EAA Chapter 103 meeting about how he flew his Long-EZ to 35,000 feet to set an altitude record.

BTW, this is a normally aspirated O320 Long-EZ!

Hangar Flying / Western US 2008 EZ Flying Events
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:46:23 AM »
Here's a compilation of the EZ flying events in the western US for 2008 from Char Spencer starting with Canards de Mayo and ending with a new event in Lone Pine, CA.  In between are the usual Jackpot and Kanab "timed events".

  http://mail2600.com/hhfc08.htm

These events aren't just for flyers; for builders they're great opportunities to see some unique EZs, put faces with names, and even snivel a ride.

Question should go to Char at the posted Email address or phone number but I can try to help too.

Hangar Flying / Wintertime Flying Activity in the West?
« on: January 03, 2008, 08:43:51 AM »
I am _so_ bored with the lack of flying activities around here.  Anyone know of any decent fly-ins in the western US this month?  Canard-specific is not necessary and I don't expect an Arlington-class event but would like something better than the typical EAA chapter bad pancake breakfast.  Something in CA, AZ, or even NM would suit me just fine.

Thanks,
Joe

Hangar Flying / Kanab Fly-in Announcement
« on: August 08, 2007, 11:09:40 AM »
This is a reminder that the Kanab Fly-in/Timed Event is just around the corner.  Char Spencer (760-375-2958) does all the work organizing this; I'm just trumpeting it because I want to see the event prosper and grow.

Last year's recap:  http://www.mail2600.com/Kanab06/index.htm

Here's the sequence of events:
--- Saturday, September 1: arrival day, pizza by the pool
--- Sunday, September 2: breakfast at the airport, "timed event", probable fly-out for lunch, possible hike in the red rocks above town, lounging around the pool, Tex-Mex "banquet" at Nedra's
--- Monday, September 3: departure day

The place to stay is Aiken's Lodge (800-790-0380).  1 or 2-bed rooms for $51; 3 beds for $71 if reserved by August 10.

A word about the "timed event": it's not a race but rather a timed course in which your time from takeoff to the finish line gives you an average speed and bragging rights to it.  Takeoffs are single-ship (no formation nowadays) and you can fly it however fast or slow or high or low you want.  Total time is about half an hour.  Half the guys fly the timed course and half abstain.  For me, it's something exciting to look forward to on Saturday morning.

For those that are interested, here's a chart of the course that I've put together (it still needs heading/distance data and descriptions of the turn points):  http://www.mail2600.com/Kanab06/KanabCourse.jpg
