Hangar Flying / Re: Downdraft vs updraft cooling
« on: April 20, 2012, 06:35:22 PM »
I posted that I stair step climb and it works. My front end cylinders get hotter in climb(3&4)
When I level out they drop quickly and stay at about 360-380F in cruise
What do you think I should do to keep temps down in climb?

If you are making excuses for not learning to fly maybe you don't want to
Age is not a problem I learnt to fly at 67 and then went from a Cessna 150 to a Long EZ
I have over 1,300 hrs. on the LongEZ and 2 deadstick landings, one off field and one on field
I don't recommend deadstick landings as part the curriculum but the rest is pure heaven

I have found that cyl.head temps increase in climb with my updraught NACA setup
I ramp climb,1k" at at a time.
This keeps the temps reasonable
Once in level flight the cht's are all within 20F

Seeing Bill James' picture of the Aussie Vari Jet reminded me of a Varriviggen I saw in a Hangar at Hollister in 2009.
Does anyone know what became of the project?
I have a set of pictures I can send offline if anyone is interested

Heat rises
I am a great believer in BKB (Burt Knows Best)
The NACA inlet on my LongEZ works fine, why change?

Build the "Plans" LongEZ and go from there.
In the Canard aviators community you can always sell parts you no longer need.
I bought a ready made LongEZ and I am always doing something to it.

I think you're missing the point.
The LongEZ was designed to be an affordable efficient aircraft for the amateur builder.
Have you considered the extra weight retract gear and a CS prop will be?
Stay with the original plans and you can't go wrong.
I fly a per plans long EZ with a Lycoming O-235 with a sparrowhawk conversion (125HP @2,800 rpm)
I get 5.5 galls/hr. at 152 Kts cruising.
The aircraft is a delight to fly and it definately saved my butt with it's efficient glide ratio.
I was at 4,800ft 12.5 miles out from a local airfield when the engine quit, I made the runway.

Hangar Flying / Re: 2 and 3 bladed Props
« on: January 12, 2012, 01:15:10 PM »
A simple addition to saving damage to pusher props is a bald nose tire.
I noticed a significant drop in prop. damage taxying on taxiways of airports in the back country.
Keeping the speed brake extended when taxying also helps, remember to close it for take off!

Hangar Flying / Re: Trailing Edge Fences.......WOW
« on: October 12, 2011, 06:33:51 PM »
I have trailing edge fences on my LongEZ. I have been flying 5+ years with them.
They are fitted just outboard of the ailerons as describe in Joe Person's post.
When I fitted them I noticed a signifant improvement in aileron control during final approach.
Starship has trailing edge fences
