Hangar Flying / VEZE wing fences
« on: October 26, 2007, 11:41:17 AM »
To all readers/posters:

For some reason this software no longer makes an automatic
return.   The result is some extremely difficult to read email.

PLEASE get into the habit of hitting return after around 60-70
letters.   Otherwise I just cannot take the time to move your
text from side to side to read it.

Maybe your computer does the automatic return.   PLEASE
have mercy on those of us that do not have that feature.

Of course I could just stop reading  ez.org   :(

Thank you for your effort everyone.....

Hangar Flying / Fiberglass, or caqrbon fiber fuel tanks?
« on: October 18, 2007, 11:03:02 AM »
Hi Barney

Making fuel tanks should be a very easy, successful project.  I
believe that N31WJ (why don't people sign their names?) has much
more experience than I do.

I just have one comment:   Why consider any foam besides the
thinnest that you can buy?   Last-a-foam can be bought in 1/4"
pieces and it is cheap.   I see no advantage to using thicker foam.

If you use kevlar, there are 3 problems:   You have to spend
about $60 for special scissors and  it is hard to cut.   I have been
there and done that.

And there is a possibility of getting delamination.    If you are
careful to cover all of the cut ends with epoxy delamination will
not happen.

S glass or E glass should work well.   Carbon fiber is way too
expensive and not needed.

There is a possibility of pinholes.   You can deal with those.
Gasoline does not dissolve Last-a-foam.

Get an expert to help!   I never had one and still do not do good
glass work.

Hangar Flying / Prop question
« on: October 16, 2007, 09:49:19 AM »
Hi Group

I was not aware of Saber's claim about superior bolts.   If I
had been, I would have ordered from Saber.   I am now using
AN76 bolts from Aircraft Spruce.

Read VERY CAREFULLY the Saber claim of longer treads.   That
feature is VERY important.   I damaged a O-235 by torquing to
the point where the shoulder hit the threads.   One more turn
and the threaded propeller insert started turning on the
propeller flange.   You cannot get the bolt out without a special
tool.   And you cannot put in bolts or torque bolts without a
special tool.   VERY serious problem.

The ONLY way to fix it is to put in an oversize insert.   I do not
have the equipment to do that.  I want to sell the engine as I
now have a O-320.   However NOBODY is going to buy it until
the insert problem is fixed.

It is POSSIBLE to rent a tool for putting in inserts.    I did
that (converting the SAE #1 engine to a SAE #2) before I created
the problem but those were standard sized inserts.   I do not
know if I could have done that with an oversized insert.

BEWARE.    :(

Hangar Flying / Place to buy a pusher propeller
« on: September 30, 2007, 07:33:14 PM »
Hi Group

I may need to buy a "spare" propeller and am wondering about a
source.   I rate Gary Hertzler and Catto VERY  high but I think there
is along wait for either of them.
 :(

Is there a third source with good quality and not such a wait?
  :)

Price and weight are very important.

Thank you for your comments.

Hangar Flying / wing tie down hardpoints - need help

Marc:   I asked the same question on Yahoogroups.com  in early in Sept
and this what I got:

sUpdate.html

Oops!  We forgot to include the tie downs in the Long-EZ plans.
Drill a 3/8" hole through the wings, 13" inboard along the leading
edge, and 9.5" aft of the leading edge.  This will assure that you do
not drill through the shear web, but will be just aft of the shear  web.
Now flox a piece of aluminum tube into each wing, so that the  tube is
flush with the skins top and bottom.  3/8 O.D. x .049w
2024T3.  Obtain two AN4 bolts and make up a couple of removable tie
downs as shown.  These can be stored in the centersection spar when  not
in use.

Hangar Flying / wind tiedown hardpoints - need help
« on: September 25, 2007, 09:47:52 AM »
Marc, Drew, and everyone

The tiedown system Drew referred to can be found at

WWW.COZYBUILDERS.ORG/CAD FILES/

I believe that Robin DuBois and Ken Miller developed them.

They should work well but the problem will be the tiedowns
that go into the ground.   There are some very pretty ones out
there that are not worth the powder to blow them to h*ll    :(

Beware.   Ask other owners, NOT the manufacturers.

Hangar Flying / Temps for the O-320
« on: September 17, 2007, 12:26:08 AM »
Hi Allen

The CSA information that you need is in this website.   On
the Homepage, click at the 5th item on the left margin.

Terry has old issues; I believe that the price is the same
as a current subscription ($30 for 1 year including the
directory).   I think you can buy individual issues.

A little further down is the Canard Pusher info.   It is no
longer published so that is all the info we will get.

Hangar Flying / Temps for the O-320 160 hp

You might try calling Lycoming.

I think the tech rep will tell you that a major cause of
engine failure is overheating of the exhaust valves.    :(

AGGGGH.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER consider wrapping an exhaust pipe!

You need a metal (SS?)  shield to protect the cowling.

I am NOT an expert; I'll just tell you what happened to me.

I read the info in Aircraft Spruce and Specialty's catalog.
Bought that lie hook, line, and sinker.   Bought the wrap
(now another type is in the catalog but the idea is the same)
and installed it.

After some time (I was just doing taxis at the time) I noticed
that the exhaust nuts were rusting severely.

Those were the exhaust manifold nuts (STD1410 or 1411, I
forgot which size) specified for Lycoming engines.

I tried to take the nuts off.   Got 6 off with some difficulty.
The last 2 were hopeless.   Rust crumbling off the outside.
Of course, the high temperature of the exhaust gas was
held in the pipe and reflected back to the flange and nuts.

I filed the nuts down on 2 sides until I could get a 5/16" wrench
on the nut.   Turned it 60 degrees.   Filed again.   Turned it
60 degrees.   Turned it and filed the 3rd set.   This filing took hours.
 :(

I took the wrap off and bought more nuts.   Never believe
what a manufacturer's label says; ask someone who has been
there.

Hangar Flying / LONGEZ for sale 90% completed
« on: September 03, 2007, 12:34:40 AM »
You will need to post some pictures, give a lot more information,
and tell us where it is located.    :(

In case one of us is interested, a big part of the expense in buying
will be the cost of transporting from your location.   It may be very
difficult if the distance is far.

You said it is "set up for O-235".   I assume that an engine is NOT
included or is there an engine?   There are different O-235
engines: either conical or dynafocal.   You cannot be set up for both.   :(

If you are serious about selling, you need to put a LOT more effort
in describing it.

Is it listed somewhere else?   David Orr?   Barnstormers?   ebay?
CSA?   Sport Aviation?

Do you have an N number reserved?   At 90% finished most of
us would have a number.

Frankly, I do not think you are serious.

Hangar Flying / Successful Bailouts?
« on: August 30, 2007, 10:46:24 AM »
I have been around the canard world for 15+ years and I do not
recall a bailout.   I think the vast majority of pilots fly without a
parachute.   I can think of only 3 cases where a parachute and a
bailout would have helped.   2 were deep stall cases which should
never have happened (1 was fatal).   The other was a weather
situation which also should not have happened.

Check your weight and balance, don't fly in bad weather, and it
is EXTREMEMELY unlikely that you will need a bailout.

Bill Swears lost the engine and landed a Cozy on a dark night in
the ocean 100 miles from Maui ( tore a wing off) and survived
At least he had a floating airplane to protect himself.

Someone (Jack Fehling?) landed on a freeway when the aircraft
was on fire and saved the airplane.

Fly safe....     :D

Hangar Flying / Wheel pants venting
« on: August 27, 2007, 10:39:25 AM »
Hi Whoeveryouare

It is considerate to sign your posts......

I think you installed the wheel pants too soon.   Yes, they look good.
Yes they give you a little more speed.    NO you really don't need
them right now.

Do you belong to the CSA?   There was an article on venting many
years ago.   There is an index where you can look it up.   I am sorry,
I don't know exactly when it was written but I have a copy somewhere.
Find the right date and Terry Schubert can furnish a copy.   Or maybe
I can; filing system is not great.
