Paint survey

I am interested in what  people are painting there planes with.
I am considering a single stage urathane like aerothane .


   1. Is the aerothane more durable than auto paint like ppg or dupont ?

   2. Does it lay down well with a good gloss?

   3. Does it repair well when spotted in

    any sugestions ?

The reason I am thinking single stage is it is lighter with fewer coats at the cost of less gloss.

What are you guys getting the best results with?

I used PPG but it is VERY expensive.   I think the guys in California have
cheaper paint from PepBoys (or somewhere) that is just as good and cheaper.   They should be replying to your posting.  

I think you can get a shade of white (it seems there are dozens of shades of white in autopaint) that is available in a spray can so you can make little repairs in the paint later.   One trouble with auto paint is any unused hardener only has a VERY limited life after the can is opened.   I guess that is not a problem for professional auto painters but it is for us.

Try colorthane from (Schirwin williams industrial) it has to be the finest 2 part paint I have ever shot. Cost is about $190 a gallon including the hardner but you won't be using the whole gallon. this stuff is so damn hard its hard to wet sand. You can shoot a clear coat if you want but it shines really nice without one. wet sand it and polish it up. amazing stuff! and its really hard. use a good charcoal respirator the isosianates will get you if your not carefull with it. Charcoal, Charcoal, Charcoal.

Thanks Tony. I think our cad drawings are great!
your anser on paint was what I was looking for. In the past I used a ppg based paint called Omni.  It was a urithane that covered a lot with a little
paint .
    what I want is a tough urithane that covers and shine well without a lot of coats.
   Also I dont want the weight of a clear coat.

Yeah that colorthane is the way to go, it covers so well. I would even say you can spray the whole airplane with a half gallon.
