Hangar Flying / LOW RPM to save fuel
« on: May 16, 2006, 10:37:26 AM »
This is where I think a MP gauge is great on any engine. When flying my Bonanza (sold after hurricane charlie scratched it), I would begin cruise descent by lowering manifold pressure by one to two inches, continuing so until 18" at pattern entry, 15" on final, and throttle to idle at flare ... never went up in MP, and never went down more than 2" every few minutes. Oh yeah, I had GAMI's and cruised lean of peak, which resulted in lower CHT's, and an average fuel burn for a 3+ hour leg of 11gph.
IO-470C. Take-off and climb was performed by leaning to take-off EGT throughout the climb (cruise climb @ 120Knots) The throttle remained full forward until time to descend. AND Yes I was screaming downhill when approaching the destination! Takes a little practice, but saves fuel, time and engine health.

It's all about MPG ... As for leaning, I live at sea level and fly a Grumman Tiger ... see my other post about looking for a EZ ... I lean right after engine start! Full rich only for take-off, and lean as soon as 2000msl. Gotta have a four way EGT/CHT though. Fewer lead fouling issues, and max power or max range; whichever I choose for the day. BUT, I say Life is short, FLY FAST.

Hangar Flying / Long EZ vs. Varieze ... again
« on: May 15, 2006, 08:25:09 AM »
My search is on, and as a larger fella, I'm trying to make the decision. I read all the old posts about the differences, and cockpit room does not seem to be a MAJOR difference factor. If only I could find examples of each close by for a quick comparison. Of course GW and range come into play, and I see a LARGE difference in Empty Weights out there! Obviously many Varieze's are operating at max max max weight. I'm thinking about a light one (625 or so), removing the installed heavy instruments, and putting in a Dynon and electronic gauges, and adding a lite-weight starter and Odyssey battery. Weight then would be 625 or so. If real GW is under 650, then fuel at another 150, leaves 310 ounds for me and a little baggage! Leave out most of the fuel, and take a passenger for two hours with reserve. Any larger EZ Pilots out there with comments?
A nice EZ can be a lot less $$$ than a decent Long...

Hangar Flying / Looking for a Long
« on: May 14, 2006, 07:46:03 PM »
I am looking for a flying Long EZ ... cash in hand. Searching out info tells me that the long and the vari have nearly identical cockpit dimensions. Others say the Long is roomier, but nobody is quoting exact dimensions! Any good info out there? If they are the same as far as width and length (cockpit) I may even prefer a vaireze ... I am high time in numerous aircraft, and am not put off by the higher approach, landing, and take-off speeds, nor the longer runway requirements. Seems that the smaller a/c is a performer!

Hangar Flying / Looking for a good GPS. On a budget so 396 is out.

try the lowrance airmap 2000, you won't be disappointed! I don't sell them, but I do own two garmins and two lowrances ... lowrance is easier to use, bigger screen, and everything you need

I was talking to Mike Carpenterio in Palm Springs, who was selling Les's plane for him. The Long EZ was on Barnstormers.com

I'm looking hard for a Long EZ .. I am a big guy (6-3 and 220# easy)
I have inquired about Varieze's and Long EZ's, downloaded the POH's, and note that they list the cockpits as the same dimension?? Others say the Long is much larger inside. What's the scoop?
