The LE canopy and hinge system does not lend itself to being easy to open. Being a glider pilot I realize that the LE canopy is basically the same shape as a modern high performance glider with one noticeable difference... the LE canopy cannot be ejected.
I have seen a video of a German glider manufacturer experimenting with a fuselage section mounted on top of a car. They drive down a runway at different speeds and see if the pilot can open the canopy, even with moderate speeds of 60 mph the canopy keeps on slamming shut due to the air pressure. The best way to hinge a canopy is from the rear and opening at the front so the air will effectively rip the canopy backwards.
Getting yourself out of the cockpit is another matter. There are many recorded glider pilot deaths where the canopy has been ejected but the pilot fails to get out of the cockpit, this once again has been an area of much research (see

I'm about 12 months away from finishing my LE project and I have been seriously looking at the Ballistic Recovery System (
http://www.brsparachutes.com/default.aspx). I have been in touch with the guys there and they inform me that they haven't done any fitting to a LE before so it would have to be done from scratch, however they would assist in any way possible.
Anyway guys, I’m never going to need a parachute… am I? :shock:
