Avionics upgrade info.
« on: October 30, 2006, 11:40:12 PM »
Hi all,

Looking to replace my current analogue engine instruments on my std 0-200 powered Vari-eze with a glass all in one EMS (Engine Mangement System).

The Dynon EMS-D10A appears quite appealling with what also appears great factory support. Wondering if any out there have had experience with this unit and the Dynon people, or similar units in the $2500.00 range.

I am cosidering a floscan fuel flow transducer in the system possibly the 201A6 or 201B6. I have a bit of a concern on whether or not they impede the fuel flow on what is only a small head pressure gravity feed system.

And just as a side thought any one in the states using the Jabiru 3300 120hp engine yet?

Regards
Mick

Mick,

My Dynon EFIS D10 had an "infant mortality" problem and needed to be shipped back to the factory a month or two after installation.  Bummer!  (In my Long-EZ, it's necessary to remove the canard to access anything on the panel and the whole operation requires a lot more cursing than usual :-)

When Dynon returned my EFIS (which has worked reliably ever since), the USD 130 Backup Battery was installed  to "compensate me for my troubles" according to Dynon's customer support.

Some time later I took advantage of Dynon's low-cost offer to upgrade my D10 to the D10A.  I was extremely pleased that my unit was not "orphaned" and the upgrade took care of a lot of my "dissatisfiers".  The unit was returned to me right on time as promised.

I've had nothing except exemplary service from Dynon and I haven't heard of anyone who has had not.  My next airplane will have the Dynon EFIS and engine monitor (large screen versions).

Just my USD .02 worth; YMMV; but Dynon is one of the "good guys".

I'm in the process of installing a Dynon EFIS and EMS in my LongEZ. I had a problem with the ammeter portion of the D10 and Dynon was a lot of help. They asked me to send the unit back to make sure it was up to specs.

They did a complete bench test and couldn't find anything wrong. When they sent the unit back, I found a note inside to call them imediatly, and they would walk me through a complete troubleshooting process.

Come to find out, I had shorted out one of the engine sensors, and this was causing the erratic ammeter problem.

I have nothing but good things to say about their customer service.

As for the product, two things

1) Don't go out and buy the sensors seperately, get them from Dynon. You'll save a bundleof money on the sensors and you know you got the correct ones.

2) Specify that you need longer EGT/CHT leads. I forgot to do this and found the pigtails on the EGT/CHT plug was only about 6ft, I need 12ft for the LongEZ.

NOTE - SteinAir makes the wire bundles for Dynon. SteinAir is in the process of making me a longer EGT/CHT connector lead set, and told me they would exchange my original set, and only charge me for the amount of the additional wire lengths.

Damn, Two great vendors that both have excellent Customer Service.

You might consider the Floscan 231 instead of the 201.  The pressure drop is supposed to be about 1/2.  The 231 has less resolution than the 201 (the "K" factor, or pulses per unit volume) but we haven't noticed any errors in our setup using 231's.

A good/cheap source is Scuba Steve's Marine Outlet here in the States.  He ships internationally and can usually get it into your hands cheaper than any of the aviation houses.
