Hangar Flying / Cold air on the feet.

My feet almost froze flying over E AZ and NM.  I bought some wool socks and taped up the canard seams, but it didn't help much.  I thought I was going to get frostbite!  Wasn't funny at the time, but could have been a serious safety issue.  

I also notice that my canopy 'warps' a little in the cold (16f) and blows air right on my right hand.  

Try to stay warm and dress in layers, seal outflows, and stop at the first sign of coldness.  I kept flying and found myself freezing cold over 6000' terrain with no airport w/in 30 mins!  "I learned about flying from that!"

Hangar Flying / XM Radio all the way!

The best thing for "tunes" in the air is the XM radio through a Garmin 396/496.  Over 200 stations, and as low as 6.99.  There is a standard headphone plug in the back of the Garmin, it will play XM Radio, and the voice on the Garmin also gives warnings like "Terrain" "sink rate-pull up" "500 feet"  etc. Check me out!

I decided to get the saw out.  I made some vent holes on the top of the pants over the rotors, it really helped and now the air vents easily.

Hangar Flying / Wobbley brakes

Thanks Glennbob for the reply.  I will have them turned.  I made sure the calipers were fully open before I put them back together, but as you mentioned, maybe they are dragging a little after brake application.  

I am at VNY and I always request 16R (the longer runway) but sometimes they are busy so I take 16L.  16L is much shorter and that is why I had to brake harder than usual, it wasn't too hard and I really don't think that one time should have warped the rotors.  But like you said, maybe the hard braking and a stuck caliper could have generated enough heat on the taxi.

Hangar Flying / Wobbley brakes

I just put new brake pads and discs on my Varieze, I had two landings, one with fairly heavy braking, and now they wobble.  

I am assuming I have warped the rotors.  

I have wheel pants and it was a short taxi to my hangar.  

Any Ideas?  

I am thinking of venting the wheel pants so they cool better.

Can I machine turn the rotors or should I replace them?

Yep, the nose gear was fully retracted.  I have now set a tool box on the nose and that is holding it down.  Ok I will give the pans to a fellow mechanic, he should be able to fix it, I don't think it went through anything important, just the trailing edge about 2"...

Hello fellow pilots.  I just bought a Varieze last week.  It was in flying condition.  It needs new brakes, disks, tires.  Not too hard eh?  Well I had the canard off and slid under the plane for storage, after taking the wheel off the gear slipped off the stand (1") and the whole plane started bouncing.  It tilted back.The prop was vertical and it poked right through the top skin of the canard!    :x   Can someone fix it?  The plane is at VNY.

By the way, I have the canard off because I am installing a Dynon EFIS!

I will post pics later, it hit midspan, trailing edge, 3" crack, scratched the elevator, nicked the prop, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
