Small lower winglets - I too have heard they are useful to protect the rudder if a wing tip touches, otherwise not effective in drag reduction as hoped.
If you are talking about LongEZ-type lower surfaces on a VariEze, I have had two that have been fabricated for several years. They are are about 3 or 4 inches tall and roughly the length of the upper winglet, going under the rudder. Cloudman described his on the wing cuffs thread here, and mine are similar to his. Am thinking that i will eventually install them and also incorporate the fairing from the wing trailing edge going back along inside the rudder, as others have talked about and as Scott Carter has on his Extra Eze if you see those pictures. Scott said that he flew with and without the lower rudders installed and they made a difference so he permanently installed them.
I think you are talking about the small lower winglets, which i have never had. But as far as any difference in the VariEze not having the larger lower winglet area, i don't know. The TE Fences make a difference on my plane and am hoping that these other lower surfaces are also beneficial at liftoff and on landing. The change in winglet drag or not will be interesting to observe. Not that i have ever experienced it personally, but i have heard that not all additions work as expected
