Last quarter's password you mean. But yeah, the one from the latest newsletter doesn't seem to work.

I'm with Bob Holliston. I didn't even realize the Cheng Shin's are not aircraft tires. Mine have held up very well.

Hangar Flying / Re: Naca scoop and gear leg finishing.
« on: May 07, 2012, 08:17:57 PM »
Glennbob,

My gear leg fairing/flex solution was similar to yours. Just make sure that the line is cut so when the gear flexes it moves clear and doesn't contact the fairing. It won't damage the gear but it could damage the fairing (unless you've built some macho fairings).

As for the NACA duct, David is correct. The smoother the better. Think of the NACA duct as creating a vortex on each side of the centerline flow, gently ushering the air into the duct. Naturally you want that centerline as smooth as possible, especially further forward in the duct.

The diffuser is for a different reason: look up "vena contracta" in google images for a good illustration. Basically, air inside the engine bay is drawn toward the inrushing air from the NACA duct. However, if there is a sharp transition at the end of the NACA duct (say, at the firewall), the momentum of this engine bay air actually narrows the airstream from the NACA. Presto, all that hard work getting the air to flow freely has just been negated and your inlet hole appears smaller to the airstream than it actually is. Cooling becomes less effective, cooling drag increases, and fast-moving air swirls around erratically inside your engine bay, making it difficult to cool the cylinders equally.

I wrote the words "Free Beer" on my diffuser. Haven't had any issues getting air to enter.

Hangar Flying / Re: Help with Long EZ vs. Vari EZ purchase decision.
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:15:06 PM »
I am also in Bremerton, just moved there a couple of months ago. I have a Varieze which I moved to my garage when I couldn't find a hangar spot... I'm at sea most of the time anyway. If you are going to be flying 2-place most of the time I'd strongly recommend the Long EZ. My Vari fits two people without any problem, but I lose out on a lot of baggage space (practically zero). You'll go a bit slower in a Long than a Vari for the same fuel burn, or will burn more fuel to match a Vari's speed, but gee all that extra space is much more practical when your back seat is filled with your honey-bunny, plus there's all that extra wing area to support the bigger motors and whiz-bang gadgets that people put on planes these days. I bought my Vari to be my spartan one-man chariot and consider my passenger to be self-loading baggage, sort of a nice afterthought but not normally carried, like an accordion on a deer hunting expedition.

You can give me a call if you like... chances are I'll be at sea though... no cell towers out there... love the Navy. 559-309-3240.

Oh yeah, can't forget to mention that Dave Orr is a great resource for acquiring a good strong plane.  Berkuts are rare but if there's one out there he knows about it.

Joshua-

Semper Fi from a Squid AMDO.  I am currently in the process of buying a Varieze, I do the "acceptance/annual inspection" this weekend.

First- USAA didn't want to do an 'airplane loan' for me, even though it was less than the car loan I had just liquidated, but that may not be everybody's experience.  I just did a small home equity loan, but didn't really borrow all that much, I mostly paid for it with cash I had on hand.  A Berkut is about 10x more expensive than a Varieze, so unless you have a wad of cash you'll have to lay out quite a bit, but I'm sure it won't be a problem if you manage your finances right.

Second- Call Falcon Insurance, if you're an EAA member you'll get a good deal, especially with all those hours flying the Bug.  What squadrons were you in, by the way?

Third- ah, not an expert there, I defer to the wiser graybeards on this board.  Annual fees go no further than an annual inspection I believe.
