Hangar Flying / Priming fuel injection
« on: May 01, 2007, 01:04:53 AM »
Waiter,

He's not talking about a carburated system.  He's talking about fuel injection and was wondering how to " Prime " the engine with that system. ( Before start ).  As he mentioned,  you open the throttle full, . .and then hit the boost for a second or two and this shoots a stream of fuel into the cylinders.  Then you back off the throttle and try to start.  This is the proceedure that Cessna uses in all their new fuel injected engines.  It is very easy to "overboost" or flood the engines so some experience is helpful.

Hangar Flying / Downdraft cooling
« on: April 29, 2007, 02:17:10 AM »
Drew,

Thanks for the pics of George's bird.  This was immensely helpful ! !

I'm not sure I'd leave the exhaust stacks shootin' straigh out the bottom, . .but to each his own.

The pics were very informative ! !   Lot's of scat there but the rear end is very clean and EZ to work on the alt, starter, cooler etc ! !    I LIKE IT  ! !

Waiter :  Thanks for the informative comments !

Charles.

I remember seeing these pics before.   I too would like to know how well this system performs.  Bill James said somthing about  " heat treating " the plenums to avoid distortion.  Did you do that ?  How is that done ?

Drew,

Your pics look like you just cut a hole in the forward side of you upper cowl.  You said you " built " the inlets.  How much more was involved ?

I am seriously considering downdraft cooling.  After looking at how small my underside naca scoop is and then all the junk in the way before the air ever gets to the cylinders, . .it only makes a lot more sense to see the fins right inside the upper openings ! !

Drew,

Other things to consider cooling :  if you have a vacuum pump, . .their life is extended dramatically if cooled.  Fuel pumps,  manual and electric.  Back of the alt is good (as you mentioned).

Where do you get your smaller naca scoops ?  Do you order from Spruce ?  or just make 'em yourself ?

Just like the other link, . . .this one is expired too.

P. S.  Hope the battery performs better than this ! !

There was a link that I had about an experimental battery.    Do a google on " Kilacycle.com " and watch the video of the electric drag motorcycle.  They had some info on a 12volt unit being tested in a Chevy Van, but the link I had expired.  Wasn't cheap but was supposed to be super performer.

Hangar Flying / Battery

I wanted to instal  IDIOT  lights in my easy, . . in case my alt.  died or such and my voltage dropped.  I wanted to know right away since I don't have mags, but two lightspeed plazma units.  Turns out, . .I already had a B & C voltage regulator and all I had to do was run a wire from ( I think ) the 5th terminal to my light and then to the + pos. of the battery.  When the alt is singing, . .the light is off, . .when it's not, . .the light flashes !! !  This is a great reminder if the engine is off and the master is left on.  The bulb flashes fast at first and slows as the voltage drops.  This should help remind the situation.

Where can I get the tube ?   Spruce ?    Can I just flare the ends and use flare fittings ?

Hangar Flying / Oil Heat
« on: April 21, 2007, 11:32:44 PM »
Change of plans.

After buying a fuel valve to use as a shut off to turn off the cabin heat in the summer, . .the valve was very heavy.  I started to think about not switching at all and keeping the second cooler " in line "  all the time.  I thought about the fact that cars have their heater cores on all the time with hot water running through them, so I think I'll go with plan B and just plumb the oil cooler in line full time.  This will eliminate the possibility of disrupting the critical oil flow to the engine, and make the system a tad lighter.

What do you guys think about using aluminum tubing for the oil pressure to the forward oil cooler ?  Is it safe enough?  or should I use steel lines ?  I could stub the fittings through the firewall and use braided hose from there to the engine.

Walter,

No, . . it's not 180  degrees between the two, . . I don't remember the exact angle but it's more like 120 or 140 degrees between the two.  Yes, . .it's a forward facing " V ".

P. S.  See the sketch in the plans.

If that's the same bird,  the second shot (you took ) doesn't have the pods on it.

Hangar Flying / VOR Antenna
« on: April 18, 2007, 10:46:07 PM »
Waiter,

I am planning to use my VOR and Glideslope for IFR flight.  ( I live in Wisconsin with lots of IMC, not in AZ ).   Therefore I want to have as much VOR and Glideslope signal as I practically can.  Do you think I'm going overboard in not wanting to use a splitter ?

When I am refering to the " outside " of the canard, . .I mean still on the canard,  but out on the lower horizontal portion of it but all on the starboard or all on the port side. (not on the fuselage).  This is what the sketch shows from the engineering dude that did the antennas on the Rutan birds. ( Including Voyager ).   He shows one on each of the wing extremedies.  One on the main wing (port) one on the canard (port) and one each on the other side (starboard).  I don't want to do more than I have to so if it'll work to use one antenna I guess that'd be easier, but I really want as much signal to each receiver as I can.

Hangar Flying / Incidence adjustment
« on: April 16, 2007, 01:25:42 AM »
Waiter,

Thanks for you info on the wing adjustment.  I took my wings off for the first time (after having purchased as a non builder) and didn't think to check how many washers and where.  So now I'm in the dark as to where to start.  This information will prove valuable ! !   Thanks also for the info on not leaving loose bolts on the wing.  I set mine up loose to install my auto pilot.  I munna go fix dat sicheashun pronto ! !
