Hangar Flying / Dimensions for the Brock Spring NG strut
« on: December 07, 2007, 12:41:42 PM »
Tom, I used my digital micrometer and measured the dimensions you requested. Consider them only as good as my fairly new micrometer.

Stop Washer = 1.415"
Shaft = .776"
Spring = 3.563"
Spring to Shaft End = 3.438"

Go to airliners.net and search for varieze. There is a picture of the airframe on that site!

Hangar Flying / Gravity feed fuel system question!
« on: November 08, 2007, 07:57:26 PM »
How significant is a slight uphill run in the fuel line installation? Does it have to be downhill all the way? I suspect that there is enough pressure due to gravity to mitigate any small uphill passage fuel might have to make. I am installing my gascolator and it looks like I may have to mount the gascolator with the inlet slightly higher than the fuel shutoff valve.

Hangar Flying / crosswind controls, limits and techniques
« on: August 30, 2007, 07:25:58 PM »
Thanks guys! I am trying to model the flight characteristics of the varieze for X-plane in anticipation of my first few flights. Do you have personal crosswind maximums? Does the upwind wing drop much at rotation if you use bank to kill the drift at takeoff? If so, how much?

Hangar Flying / crosswind controls, limits and techniques

I need to know the max crosswind component for the varieze. I did not see it in the POH. Also, what are some techniques you varieze drivers are using for crosswind takeoffs and landings (i.e. rudder, differential braking and bank)?

Hangar Flying / Build my confidence...please!
« on: August 05, 2007, 09:40:31 PM »
I am hopefully less than a year away from finishing my varieze. I purchased the project with alot of the work already done. It sounds like you and I are in a similiar situation. I wonder sometimes about the quality of work on my project as well. The concerns won't stop me. They will only make me double and triple check all the things that need checking. I don't think you are experiencing any fear. I think it is simply a matter of self preservation. I can't imagine test flying a plane I had built without experiencing a small amount of apprehension!

Hangar Flying / Alternator Question
« on: June 17, 2007, 12:42:13 PM »
I just spoke with an engine guy who stated that what I was asking about is a Great Plains adaptor for use with a high output automotive alternator. He said that he thinks it is for use with a Geo Metro alternator.

Hangar Flying / Replacing firewall stainless steel
« on: April 20, 2007, 09:40:16 AM »
I pulled my stainless steel to do some work to the firewall. Mine had the fiberfrax in between the steel and firewall. The stainless steel/fiberfrax was simply glued on using a silicone type adhesive. I believe that is per plans. The panel pulled away very easily. I took a putty knife with a sharpened edge and removed the residual silicone adhesive. The fiberfrax had to be replaced due to it's own fragility. I used 3M spray adhesive to re-apply the new fiberfrax. Of course my engine is not mounted and I had only to remove the rudder cable hardware.

Hangar Flying / VOR Antenna

Waiter,
So if the canard were inverted and I were to be looking down upon the two foil tapes, they would be 180 degrees between the two? The reason I ask is I believe I saw something about the two foil pieces forming a forward pointing "V".
