Hangar Flying

Yeah..watch that speed brake handle, I almost broke my hand when mine slammed down at about 95 KTS. It scared the sh** out of me.  Live and learn.

Congrats on your new bird, and I enjoy your stories on the web site.  I think we talked about selling my Long ez a while back. Turns out I sold out my partnership to my co owner, now I am having withdrawls. I also had my job transfered to Utah and it gets very cold here, I see you have discovered that with your report of flying while the cockpit was 7 degrees.  May look for another one with a good heater.  Keep up your flight reports.  I was thinking of writting something about selling and having a real craving to get back into another one.  Maybe I will, but it's a sad story.

I am in the category of a flyer owner who purchased my Long ez from the original buider. I have now owned the airplane for 9 years and have learned alot about flying her and maintaining her.  I would have to say that I do spend alot of time either fixing something or trying to upgrade something else.  Seems like it is never done, but I enjoy working on the plane and leave the complicated things to the AP.  I have put a Catto 3 blade prop on her and saw a good improvement in speed and vibration. I added an electric nose gear which is a great mod which is a life saver if you have a bad back like me.  Next will probably be paint, something I have put off for a long time. Dont relish the idea of sanding her down. Like David Orr says, it is hard to let go of these airplanes. I was half heartedly tryng to sell her last year when I found a partner to buy in.  He is in the process of checking out right now and is looking forward to upgrading some things.  We bought a new ICOM radio and he also has a 0320, so we may go to that engine some time next year.  The 0235 has been good, but with two people aboard the 0320 is the way to go.  I have put about 300 hours on her ( it has had some extensive down time due to maintenance issues) over the last 9 years.  Some great flying in the Pacific Northwest where my brother lives and of course some good times here in Southern California.  If you are thinking of buying one of these planes, and you can find a good one, it is a hoot!

So how was mesquite?  It seems like the gods were against me, Hawthorne was solid IFR in fog on Saturday morning and then I discovered some radio problems with my NAVCOM.  I just can't seem to get it together.  I saw the link on your progress, pretty good speeds.  What do you do to stay warm in the airplane at high altitudes?  It's starting to get cold in Utah, the plane is still in Southern Cal. and I have put it up for sale, hate to let her go, but I have no time to fly.  Maybe if I found a hangar in the Salt Lake area, too cold to keep it outside.

From one who fly's with the 0235 I can tell you it's not bad, but the 0320 is the way to go.  I think alot of us guys with the 0235 would love to up grade to the 0320 and many in fact have.  Just another itme on the wish list.  The 0320 offers better climb and better high density altitude performance.  The 0235 is not exactly a slouch though, on a 60 mile trip two 0320's beat me by aobut 2 minutes.  Even though it's a little slower, it still beats most spam cans for fun and expense.  Good luck.

Hey Joe;

I may try and make it out there, I also fly a 0235 Long ez and she's a little slower than most.  Working out some minor maintenance issues but should have them done.  I am at Hawthorne just southeast of LAX.  Are you in the San Diego area ?  Will keep you posted on my progress with the maintenance issues.
