Hangar Flying / add extra comm antenna
« on: June 21, 2005, 06:51:33 PM »
I'm using a "rubber duckie" antenna with an aluminum strip acting as the ground plane. The ground plane is about 19 inches long and 1.25 inches wide, bolted to the back of the pilot seat with nylon spacers between the seat and the strip. I was talking to a plane over 150 miles away this past weekend. In case my panel mount com goes bad, I just reach behind me and unscrew the antenna out and put it in my handheld. Total cost of the antenna was under $25. By the way, we tested it on the meter and got 6 watts out and 0 back

« on: May 24, 2005, 07:00:25 AM »
Ok Florida Canardians,
Lets plan on getting together for a little breakfast and cheap gas at KOBE on June 4, 2005. 9:00 AM.

So far we have 4 confirmed EZ's showing up and would like to see more.  This will give us a chance to meet other flyers and give the builders a boost.  So dust the plane off, fill the tires, and we will see you there!
Regards :D

« on: April 18, 2005, 07:48:01 PM »
Greetings,
I would like to organize a little fly-in/breakfast type meet and greet for canardians in the south and central Florida area. To be held at either Okochobee (KOBE) or Lakeland (KLAL) sometime in early to mid May. Let me know what you think.

Hangar Flying / landing with a varieze
« on: February 26, 2005, 09:17:58 PM »
Mathias,
The method I use for landing my VE is to aim for the REIL. (Runway End Identifier Lights) I like to be around five feet above them as I settle in for the flair. Always keep the runway in view. Hold the nose off but not too high for areodynamic braking. For speeds, you will have to find your best speeds for your particular plane. In my opinion, aiming for the numbers will just waste valuable runway underneath you. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Hangar Flying / ROTAX 912S
« on: January 09, 2005, 09:59:21 PM »
Hello Aaron

Before I took the plane down seven months ago for some aerodynamic clean ups, I last indicated about 158 KTS at sea level top and would normally see a cruise around 147 kts indicated with no speed mods or wheel pants. The climb rate is well over 2000 FPM even on a hot South Florida day. The Ivo prop helps a bunch on the climb out, but I know my top speed is suffering due to the prop. The installation and mount was pretty straight foward with no suprises. I am helping other builders with thier installations of Rotax engines on the EZ's. I did learn alot and can make thier installs alot easier. The joke around the FXE is that I keep saying " On my next one, I gonna do ..."  The biggest gain was the weight saving. The plane weighed 760 with the Lyc O-235 and when I was finised it weighed in at 713. Still a little heavy for VE standards but what can you do. The price was right. Email me for a pic of the cowl mods.

Hangar Flying / ROTAX 912S

Hello Ray
Section IIa of the LE plans calls for the installation of Cont. O-200.  If your building a light and simple plane like Burt had intended, then a Rotax 912uls (100 HP) would work. If your building a IFR speedster with all the creature comforts of home, then the 912uls is not what you're looking for.
I'm running the 914 in my VE and am very pleased with the results. There is another builder who has purchased one for his Long and another Vari will be installing a 912uls about 30 miles from me.
