Hangar Flying / VEZ Fuel Tank
« on: April 12, 2006, 01:01:23 PM »
Thanks for the detailed post, Waiter.  I am certainly aware of the weight restrictions and would only be interested in carrying extra fuel for long range solo trips.  Any fuel system upgrades would surely be simpler if done now while I still have access to the Hell Hole from the bottom.  As for making larger strakes, I have not yet installed the strake tops, but the strake size is already established.
Niceez, I will try to look Joe up and get his input.  Would anyone recommend installing sump blisters under the strakes or just rely on the header tank above the spar?

Hangar Flying / Back Seat Fuel Tank Construction/Plumbing
« on: April 11, 2006, 01:49:16 PM »
I am two years into the construction of a new VE.  After reading a recent post from Waiter, I'd like to ask for suggestions/opinions about aux fuel tanks in a Varieze and Pro's/Con's for back seat vs. wing pod tanks, etc.  I am also open to suggestions about plumbing, mounting, and any other idea you might have on installation.  Photos, diagrams, or links to websites would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Trevor

Hangar Flying / Varieze Main Wing Anhedral
« on: May 24, 2005, 10:05:24 AM »
Gentlemen, I am nearly finished with my second varieze wing and will soon be mounting the attach brackets to the center spar.  Over the years I have read a few opinions on the main wing anhedral.  Some feel the plane flies better with the anhedral decreased or removed altogether.  While I tend to be a stock builder and embrace few modifications, this is one change that cannot be made later.  If you have flown a VE with this type of modification and can make a recommendation, I would like to hear from you.  Thanks in advance,
Trevor

Hangar Flying / Varieze vs LongEz gear bow weight
« on: March 17, 2005, 11:23:16 AM »
I just finished the reinforcement layups on a Featherlite LE strut.  It started out raw at 22 pounds.  When I cut the three inches off each side, I shed a pound.  I suppose I will save another four or five ounces when I finish trimming the leading edge to accept the brake calipers.  I think my LE strut will come in at 21 pounds before primer and paint when modified for the VE.

Hangar Flying / Templates
« on: March 17, 2005, 11:14:02 AM »
I am in the middle of a new construction VE.  The only template I don't have is for the centersection spar.  Let me know what you need and I will see what I can get for you.  I have already helped one builder get templates for a VE he is rebuilding out west.

Hangar Flying / Engine for Varieze

My only concern is avoiding aft CG and over-gross conditions.  What does your 160hp Lyc installation weigh?

Hangar Flying / Engine for Varieze
« on: January 25, 2005, 06:48:35 AM »
Gentlemen,
For the VE drivers, what did your total engine package weigh?  I am half-way through the fuselage construction and have started saving for an engine.  There are several new types available.  Jabiru has a 4 cylinder (85HP) a 6 cylinder (120HP) and an eight cylinder (170HP) on the market.  See the link below for engine weights.

http://www.usjabiru.com/aircraft_engines.htm

The weights given seem to include everything but exhaust.  I built the "Eric Cobb" longer nose and have room to put the battery up front to balance more engine.  Does the extra HP offset the extra weight of the 8-cylinder or is it just too much.  I'm interested to see what your Ve engine installations weighed.
Thanks,
Trevor
