Seems simple enough.  Just cut a rectangular hole to let the hot air out the underside of the cowling.  You have the higher pressure air inside the cowling, but it seems like you would have higher pressure air under the wing too.   Has anyone tried a 1/4 or 1/2 inch raised lip in front of the cut out that would, in effect, pull air down through the oil cooler and give it someplace to go?  For that matter wouldn't the same principle work for the elevator tube holes, at least equalizing pressure instead of designing a seal to keep the cold out?
Located in Fort Edward NY. I bought my O-320 Long EZ as a 90% complete project.  After three years of rebuilding it is now 90% complete.  Currently flying my 1946 J-3 Cub.

I did a round hole under the left side of the cowling. Over this I put a reverse scoop with the opening facing aft.

The scoop is about 1/2 inch x 4 inches.

Plug this up for the winter and get a 40 degrees temperature change in the oil on a 30 degree day. ( From 140 to 180 degrees ). I would guess this shows that the air does find its way out of this little hole.

In the summer the temperature hangs around 190 evn on hot days.

Oh. The engine is an O-235 L2C
