Hangar Flying / Re: Aug 9 Va airshow
« on: July 30, 2008, 03:08:23 PM »
To make the event (coming and going), it will be a little more than 3 hours of total flight time and about 9 hours of driving.

Are you staying the night in Richlands--or are you flying back?

Looking at getting a hangar at KBLM---and hopefully I can get someone to share with me.  Hangar cost up here are literally twice as much as I pay at Pax---and for the same size hangar---yikes!

After getting back from Iraq (12 months away from flying) a couple of months ago, I have not flown that much.  The ORM in me is telling me to just fly as a flight of one.  My next formation work will be done after I get some more flying under my belt and when not tied to a fly-in event.

The logistics for me to get there will be an event itself.  I have started working in Lakehurst, NJ---the moving truck just got packed today and is on its way.  I don't have a place to hangar my plane in NJ yet---so I will drive down to Pax on Friday night (4 to 5 hours of driving), stay at the "Q" then fly over on Saturday morning.

Allen,
I will meet you out there at Tazewell (wx permitting)---this time bringing wife and daughter.  Did not know my airplane made that much of an impact---cool!

Mike,
I am glad you are still with us.  Were you able to shut the electrical system down?  And if so, did the fire quit when it was shut down---or continue to burn?

Regards---and get better soon!

Hangar Flying / Exhaust pipe routing

Here is a picture of the back end of my old longez.  At that time, I had only modified the back of the cowl so that the engine would fit.  The plan was to take the huge lower cheek humps out---but they tuck up pretty good.

A picture would help to see what the problem is.  Hal Hunt pipes tuck up pretty good and should not hit your cowls.

Hangar Flying / prop FOD

Send the pix to the prop manufacturer and have them give you a quote.  My prince got a real good slice through the fiberglass exterior.  I had them not only repair it---but switched to carbon.

In the end (along with shipping prices back and forth) It would have probably been cheaper to just get a brand new one.

What in the world did you hit?  Looks big whatever it was...

The owners manual shows the frequency of checks----and what the tolerances of those checks are.

Hangar Flying / Got the plane back and went flying today

hmmm...I don't have a official source at my fingertips.  However, based upon a quick check on the internet yielded pretty much the same as the below link.

So I challange your statement of an incorrect installation.  Please post what the FAR says (while wiki is interesting---it is not official).

Hobbs time is only giving the amount of time the electrical system is on (even if you leave the electrical system "on" overnight).

From what I know, tach time does not start recording until you have oil pressure.  There should be an oil pressure switch on one of your oil lines.  Either that got disconnected or the switch went bad.

At least one of the EI tachs do not use oil pressure----it uses Engine RPM.  Anything over 1300 RPM gets measure as tach time.  If yours is this one, you may want to ask EI what is up with that---pretty much a self contained unit.

Hangar Flying / Brake Job

I have a stand that goes on the axle when the wheel is off the plane.

For a Longez, I would put my back between the strake and wing junction and pick up the wing with my legs (just like you do when you park the Long to relieve the main gear bow stress)---then have my wife remove the wheel and then slide the jackstand on the axle.

The Cozy is too hard to pick up using this method.  I use this jack:

But also take a look at these:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/rvjack.php (note that this is both a jack and a stand).

Hangar Flying / I'm finally an owner!!!
« on: January 31, 2008, 04:48:40 PM »
That is a mod that people have been doing for a long time.  Much better feel on the brakes.  All of the Cozys are set up in a similar way.  There are many different ways to actuate the brakes from the front.  This picture appears that he is using the "trombone method."
