Varieze vs LongEz gear bow weight

Does anyone recall the difference in the weight between these two components?

From the Canard Pusher #23, pg. 2

"The new main gear is 65% stronger than the old VariEze gear and should not be susceptible to the long-term creep (spreading and loss of camber) experienced on some of the heavier VariEzes.  The new gear is 3 inches longer on each end to raise the prop clearance on the Long-EZ.  VariEze builders using the new gear will saw off the 3 inches.  The old main gear weighed 16 lb.  The new one weighs 21 lb.  While we regret any increase in empty weight the experience has shown that many VariEze are being operated heavier than expected and need the extra beef in the gear."

I just finished the reinforcement layups on a Featherlite LE strut.  It started out raw at 22 pounds.  When I cut the three inches off each side, I shed a pound.  I suppose I will save another four or five ounces when I finish trimming the leading edge to accept the brake calipers.  I think my LE strut will come in at 21 pounds before primer and paint when modified for the VE.

If the LE strut is 65% stronger, why reinforce it?

The reinforcements is really a "Band" wrapped around the leg.  The fibers in the leg all run in one direction, In order to prevent the leg from literally splitting apart, they must be wrapped.
