Hangar Flying / Starter cable size

When Burt Rutan originally sent out plans that included a starter for a C-85 Continental, the cable was specifed as a very large 1/0 stranded copper that weighs a lot.....probably 30 or more pounds.

Yes I am flying with twenty feet or more of this very large cable, but I don't have any voltage drop ! I would suggest a smaller size.

I can appreciate your remarks about questions that are asked about our canard," backwards flying airplanes without a nose gear".
Since I completed my Varieze in 1981, I know where you are coming from.
My approach to questions has always been very honest and direct. My logic has been that my answering 'silly' questions was nothing compared to what Burt Rutan was undoubtedly going through. So I could understand his shortness at times. Now 26 years later, I am still occassionaly getting the same questions that I got long ago.
I have found it amusing to know what question was coming as someone approached my plane. If their head was tilted to one side the question related to either the lack of a nose gear or what speed did the nose come up. If they stood back and looked for a while their question was which way does it go. I just smile and say 'Hi ".!
I got caught once when a fellow came to the hanger and asked what speed does the nose come up. I told him about 55 mph........and then realized he was asking when it stopped sliding on the ground !
There will always be those that are first timers.......enjoy!!

I have read where LongEzs have been tilted to fit in a moving van. I expect that tilting about 30 degrees (without doing the math) should get you thru the garage door since you only need five inches to clear.

If you want a pair of really bright halogen lights that do put out lots of light and heat try the PIAA egg shaped driving lights. I installed one in the nose of my Varieze with fiberfrax and some venting for heat. They are as small as any I have been able to find other than possibly a motorcycle light.
They could cost a couple of hundred, but you will be seen in the air !!
I got my pair (shared with hanger partner for about $170) on ebay.  Our planes are hard to see in the air and closings speeds are usually over 300mph.

I know that I purchased a canopy from them in the 1970's. It was mounted in the frame by Jiran also at Mojave.
Can not tell you anything about them currently.
