Hangar Flying / Electromotive EI
« on: April 05, 2006, 11:59:12 AM »
I did some research on the Electromotive EI system and the cost of a 4 cylinder unit for a Volkswagon comes to $970.
The system is almost identical to the Electroair system, the coil packs look the same. The installation handbook is almost identical to the Electroair.
I just paid $1100 for an Electroair and it comes with a MAP unit and a Mag Hole sensor unit so you would not save much if any on Elecromotive.

Hangar Flying / LongEZ range
« on: March 05, 2006, 07:33:24 PM »
I have a LongEZ O-235 L2C and I have recently fitted a EI FP-5L fuel computer and these are the numbers I am getting.
Full rich take off..........................................8.2 GPH
Above 5,000ft lean to rich of peak................6GPH
Cruise speed..............................................140 Kts
Let down for landing....................................3.2GPH.
The average GPH works out to about 6GPH
With 40 Galls on board range should be 1066 miles.
This of course with ideal weather conditions, no 40Kt headwind.

I have been waiting with baited breath for details of your return flight.
Did you spend the gas money at the tables?

Hangar Flying / P/E Mags
« on: February 04, 2006, 06:17:32 PM »
Interesting that the P/E Mags still have intermittant missing.
I returned 3 units in Jan to April timeframe for the same problem.
I see the P/E mags got write ups in EAA and Kitplane Mags. so hopefully with more buyers the problems will be fixed.

Hangar Flying / Brakes
« on: January 13, 2006, 02:20:20 PM »
I have always been concerned with the nylon brakes in the EZs.
The part I feel is expressly vulnerable is the line from the gear leg to the brake caliper.
I have put together a kit that replaces the line with stainless braided teflon hose and all the connectors. The tricky one was from the braided hose flare to the nyloseal compression.

I f you want to practice radio protocol buy Comm1.
It is a computer program that takes you thru. all aspects of radio communication.
I still use it today to practice going into class C airspace.

Hangar Flying / LongEZ Landing
« on: January 02, 2006, 01:07:24 PM »
The landing was at Petaluma on my way back from Shelter Cove where I had a fresh abalone lunch, we have a hard life here in California.
I often wonder how the rest of the world survives.

On my Web Site I have a sequence of pictures of me landing my LongEZ.
With all due modesty I'd say it was a perfect landing...................... boy that should bring out the critics.
Go to

Click on LongEZ landing, brings up a file with 10 pictures

Hangar Flying / P-Mags
« on: December 17, 2005, 12:50:34 PM »
Looks like there are still problems with P/E-Mags.
I used 18 gauge wire from the breaker to the P-Mag and a similar wire for ground.I'm still hanging on to the Slicks, waiting for a fix.

Hangar Flying / LEZ Basic empty weight
« on: November 09, 2005, 09:03:49 PM »
I have a LongEZ with a O-235L2C and it weighs 970 lbs.
I regularly fly over max wt. with a passenger and fuel for a decent trip.
It's a bit sluggish getting out of high density alt. airfields but flies great.
I have a Cato 3 blade 58x66. I cruise at 140 kts @ 6gph and 2580 rpm.
My weight is due to cockpit trim and decent seats and if you fly it within the "envelope" it is perfectly satisfactory.

Thanks for the feedback, that's what forums are all about.
I must confess I have the instrument panel access panel so I fly a modified LongEZ, some mods make sense.
