I'll have to check the books for myself when I get home---but really don't think that they are the same. Take a look at any picture of a Varieze panel and compare that to a Longez panel---much more realestate to place instruments on which would suggest a wider fuselage.
The Longez strakes give the front seater quite a bit of elbow room in cruise flight----you can really stretch out. The Varieze strakes are not accessable-----except for at least one modified Varieze that I know of. The Longez can also carry much more weight.
Most people can't tell the difference between a Long and Vari when you look at them (never mind that the anhedral Varieze wings and sharp rake of the strakes are a dead giveaway). However, when you park them next to each other, the Long is quite noticably larger.
