Hangar Flying / Emag/PMag and EICAD software question
« on: November 02, 2010, 08:42:23 PM »
Just wondering if anyone is using the EICAD software with their Emag/PMag?

I notice today that the RPM displayed on EICAD is bouncing quite a lot -- about 20-30 RPM.   Is this normal?
EICAD is my only readout since my Magneto is piped to my tach.

I would like to know as well.   I have a line on a Lancair 360 kit that is 15 years old -- it still isn't started and has been garage kept in here in the Pacific NW.

Is there a shelf life on unprotected fiberglass?

Thanks Joe.  I doctored Waiters weight and balance sheet for my plane http://iflyez.com/LongEZ_Weight_and_Balance.shtml

Good thing my GIB (girl in back) is thin  :)

Timely discussion, I have to placard the maximum passenger seat weight and I can't find the design limits for the rear seat.  Anyone know the limit/reference?

Good to go with the type rating and I'm just trying to keep ahead of the MD-RA and have all my ducks lined up for inspection.

Did you ever put together a formal 24-0055A?

Looks like a change of heart?   Oh, how these machine rule our hearts.

Are there any Canadian Varieze (or LongEz) owners out there that could provide me with a copy of their Transport Canada 24-0055A Maintenance Schedule.    I'm beginning the process of importing an Varieze and I need to create one (I also need one for my Annual/100 hr inspection prior to MD-RA inspection).

if your not sure what I'm talking about you can see a blank one here http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/standards/maintenance-regsdocs-24-0055a-3454.htm

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Aaron

Hangar Flying / Re: Exhaust Insulating Wrap
« on: May 09, 2010, 02:26:08 AM »
Found it...  CP 46 page 7 (knew I'd seen it somewhere!)...

Ralph Gaither, Safety Officer for the Navy and a high time VariEze
pilot, reports what he considers to be a possible flight safety problem
for pilots using a product call Thermeeze Tape (high strength ceramic
tape).  He purchased this product from Sport Flight in Florida.  Ralph
installed this tape per the instructions, to his exhaust pipes (this EZ
already had over 800 hours of flight time).  Within 100 hours the
cowling was burned completely through in close proximity to the ceramic
tape.  In addition the tape crystallized broke down to a powder and
generally fell apart into the cowl.

Ralph is very concerned that with this condition and the use of
carburetor heat, some of the powdered ceramic tape could be ingested
into the engine, possibly causing engine stoppage.  In addition to
this, Ralph noticed no benefit whatsoever to the operation of his
engine.

RAF has never recommended this tape or any other similar material.  If
you are using it, we suggest an immediate, careful examination of the
tape before next flight.  Sport Flight has been informed of this
problem.

I'm sure I read something in the CP's about insulation being a bad idea.   I just can't find it at the moment.

Hangar Flying / Re: VariEze header tank
« on: March 19, 2010, 12:44:06 PM »
Yes, the correct term per the CP's is "Fuselage Tank".   CP 11, page 5 has a diagram and details it's use...

"The fuselage tank is filled when the aircraft is fueled -- it has its own cap (same cap as on wings).  The fuel system is operated as follows:  The fuselage tank is normally used only for starting the engine with the nose down.  The wings are selected after the nose is up and the pilot gets in.  If the flight is planned so that the decent is done with less than two gallon in each wing, the pilot selects the fuselage tank for the descent and landing." ... etc...

The CP's are here.... http://www.cozybuilders.org/Canard_Pusher/ (great reading and "must know" info for any new owners).

Yes the header tank is intended to correct a fuel flow issue while in an (extended) nose low attitude (such as a long decent).

Hangar Flying / Intro and request for help in Texas
« on: February 14, 2010, 11:52:42 AM »
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself and request some assistance.  I have been lurking here for a few months and I am now in Long-EZ (or VariEze) purchase mode.   I am a Canadian Air Force pilot with a background in Search and Rescue as well as Transport.  I have a mix of time on everything from a Champ (very humbling) to H-46 helo's (we called them CH-113) to A310 Airbus (my first aircraft with an real lavatory).   I am currently in a ground job as an Air Search Coordinator at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria on the west coast of Canada and missing flying.   The "Joint" is due to the office being staffed by Canadian Coast Guard and Canadian Air Force Officers (and a way to gain more funding?).

I was wondering if there were any Long-EZ or VariEze builders or owners in the Houston, Texas area that would like to check out a partially completed Long-EZ for me.   I'm looking for someone to give me an honest assessment of the build quality and work required to complete the project as well as snap a few pictures.  I'm not looking for a tear-down, AME inspection of the plane,  just an educated guess as to whether or not the project may be worth the effort.   I would be happy to pay your minor expenses such as gas and lunch.

Please PM me if you are interested or you have any suggestions.

Cheers,
Aaron

PS - If anyone knows of any composite builder assistance shops in Houston please let me know.
