Unfortunately I missed that one.  Did they say how much wear or TBO on the gear?  What about inspection periods?

I'll ask Emag Monday.  So far, they've been pretty straight with their answers.

Wow! With all the trees, dirt and wind shear off the buildings, how do the T-6 and Twin do??

I also use 2000' as a rule of thumb for safe take offs and landings.  Factor in fuel/pax load, density altitude and wind and I've done 1800' without problems.  For brakes, I replaced the Clevelands with Robbie Grove's 2 years ago and stopping has never been a problem since.

I have found that for short field takeoffs, I do better by maintaining neutral elevator until 65, then rotating at 70.  Keeping the drag at a minimum while gaining speed helps until rotation.  I fly 120 on downwind, 100 base, 90 final and 80 over the fence.  Try not to use the board untill short final.  Touchdown is right about 72 with long runways using Bert's "Canard on the horizon" viewpoint.  By holding a slower downwind, the whole landing sequence is slower and less apt to get out of hand.  Also, by keeping the speed down using board and rudders as needed takes care of any excess speed.  I also use full forward slips to increase decent rate and found that in my airplane, it works as well as 45 degree dutch rolls.

I heard once that brother Dick has landed much shorter using the "Under the Canard" view, but that is probably just rumor?  I've thought about it but am concerned about hitting my prop at high angle of attack.

By the way, I'll be flying comercial Tuesday to Seattle and headed home Thursday.  Maybe I'll stop by and eyeball the strip.

Bruce, is this wx ever going to break???

You've got my number.  Give me a call if you're coming through KFalls!  Lots and lots of airplane stories to hear/tell over the campfire.

I will be headed for Seattle and a week of work as soon as the wx clears.  What is your closest airport???

Well, didn't make it to Red Bluff.  Another story of, "ground too high, clouds too low"!

Left LMT headed for Fall River Mills to follow the power lines down through the canyon which is the lowest route over the Syskiyous; no luck and snow in all the passes.  Then headed for Weed, CA around Mt Shasta with her head in clear air and shoulders in the clouds with the same results.

So, I did what any determined avi8or would do......headed into clear air and had a blast just flying around doing some sight seeing.  The wx has been so bad this winter that some sun and mid level stratus really made the day!

Oh, forgot to mention that the E/P Mags performed flawlessly.  Not a miss, not a stumble, nothing but lots and lots of airplane noise for 1.5hrs!  I called Brad at Emag to congratulate him on a job well done and he asked if I was finally a "happy boy".  Yes I am, thank you!

Then he let me know that the next step for EMag is the development of a cockpit control that will let the pilot adjust the timing in flight.

Sounds good Brad, I'll continue to post the E/P Mag results as more time is flown.

Dave,  too bad I read about the return trip toooo late!  Next time you or any other Rutan drivers needs an overnight home in KFalls, call me!  I have my long hangared and safe with room for another nose down parker.  They do nest quite nicely!

Glad you had a good trip!  I also have rented a car and drove home from Susanville when the passes were to high and the ceiling too low.  On that trip, Dave (rest in peace) let me share his hangar for a couple days and took me to lunch at the casino before departing.

I remember a quote from Jack, "tis better to error on the side of safety"

I frequently travel with a standard size airline carry on that fits perfectly in the back seat.  On top of that, the laptop/work case with all my files, etc.  Both items get strapped down with the GIB's belt and shoulder harness.

Anything else I need to bring goes on the floor with my jacket over it so that with some twisting, I can reach over the seat back and grab it in flight.  The jacket also acts as packing for anything on the floor.  Gone through some pretty ruff air in the 500+ hours I've been using this a/c for work and have never had baggage come loose.

I've never seen anyone hang a suit in an Ez, but...

Just finished the install on the new E/P113 series.  Shorter case so it now fits without being "Too Close" to the firewall which was a pleasant surprise.  Flew .4 today without misses or stumbles of any kind.  Started easily and runs smoothly at low RPM.  Installed at 5 degrees AFTER TDC per Brad at Emag.

This is GOOD news!

Tomorrow it's a test hop from LMT to RBL, wx permitting.  Will advise performance, etc.

I spoke with Brad at Emag this morning and he said he would send (today or Monday) two NEW series units as replacements for the red/gold versions that I now have.

http://www.emagair.com/113.htm

The wireing is different, but if the "mis' problem is solved, then it is definately worth the effort.  Brad also said that if I still have a mis, then the problem is NOT IN THE IGNITIONS.  I'll have to check that one out since my Slicks never missed.

If he does what he says, then I'll have them on and testing next week.

I'll let you know what's up.

Be SURE that your O235 engine mount has been re-worked with gussets to provide the extra strength you will need for the additional Hp/torque.  Mine wasn't and the top extrusion seperated on takeoff.

Luckily I felt 'something' and landed.  I had it gusseted and welded by a real pro, so now after 100hrs we're still ok.  I check the mount carefully every time the cowling is off though.

Good luck and do the O320.  Have you ever flown an aircraft with too much power?

Can only recommend Gary Hertzler.  He carves (fondles) them himself, flys a Vari and is very helpful when it comes to drag reduction and how to do 'stuff'.  And he is Awesome to work with.  I've flown his prop for 3 years and can recommend him highly.

Made the R/T to LA and back with intermitent misses both ways.  I currently have one Emag and one Pmag.  I spoke with Brad at Emag and he is going to send out a new Pmag for me to trade out the Emag currently installed.

His position is that if we can't identify the offending unit, then replace the E with a P.  Then if the miss still occurs, trade out the existing P with a new P.

He is suppose to send it today.  I'll keep you updated.

Yesterday 6FEB06 I flew .4 hrs all attitudes and throttle settings with "0" misses.  Don't know what was done differently or maybe we have a break in period, but the O320 never missed a beat!

Today I fly 3.3 hrs and 530NM from KFalls to LA for a couple days work and RTB.  Will advise E/P Mag status at that time.  This is the Final Test.

I've got about 10 hours on my E/P setup and still have an intermitent miss, or stumble.  I've been over it with Tom and Brad and they have been most helpful but so far, the condition still exists.

According to Brad, long wire runs and/or a 'dirty' electrical system can cause this phenomena but they have implimented fixes to circumvent the problem.  However, I've still got it.

I have wired the units as per instructions and for the next test flight also will have a back up battery in the back seat with a switch so I can to to either aircraft power or direct battery power.  This should eliminate any chance of dirty power and at the same time identify the offending unit if it is the E or P.

All set up, just waiting for a VFR day to fly. Winter has been tough this year.

Dave, Anytime.  Your ride up the coast is something I LOVE to do.  Nothing like running full bore at 20' and go into a pull up just to watch the earth get smaller!

Watch out for birds!

Haven't talked to Tom or Brad about it, but what if we went with 14 or 12 wires just for the test.  Then run off a seperate battery just for the test.  I know it's not my job to run interference, but I'd sure like to get my 1930's engine somewhat up to speed with a 21st century ignition!

My damn lawnmower has solid state ignition!  Why can't I have it on my plane????

ps (I've still got my slicks too)
