Post by: Tom on February 17, 2005, 12:30:24 PM
Hi everyone,,

Has anyone tried using a K&N airfilter?? ,, In my quest to get as much power as possible, I thought I might try one.

Any input is appreciated!!

The Hal Hunt & the Van's cold air box mod. use K&N filters.
I used to motor race vintage formula junior cars and I used twin K & N filters on the twin choke webbers I had fitted. There was no difference in performance with them on & off and they did a great job keeping out dust and gravel when I spun off.
The cleaning kit restores them to new.

I replaced my rectangular air filter on a ram air box with a same size K & N. The plus was I got a bit more power, but  it also increased my carb icing potential.  Still using the K & N. The other filter was foam and was not the best idea for an air filter since it could eventually end up with pieces sucked into the carb.

I use a paint filter screen over the ram air intake. Keeps the bugs out. If the prop was in front of the intake. That would be another story.

I have run two of them on my Long. When I installed my first one, did a static runup without a filter, then installed my K&N and saw a tad increase of static RPM.

Just ensure the area in front of your intake is clean of any dust or debris.
