Hangar Flying / Garmin Antenna

I have a 296 and the antenna is in the roll over structure behind the pilot.
Never had a problem, it's just laying in the structure not even mounted upright.I also have a panel mount Appollo GX 55 which was a plug and play unit to replace an Appollo Loran.This is an excellent unit although it has the old yellow display and notchy characters but it is a good backup for the 296. The Appollo antenna is on the out side on the nose mounted on the battery access panel, never any problem with a signal.

I know it will never happen to any of you but if you should land with the nosewheel retracted I have had made an aluminum skid plate that will take most of the initial contact with the tarmac.It is made of 0.25" 6061T6
Aluminum stock.

While on the subject of Nose Gear I have the following recommendation.
Replace all the winding mechanism tubing with solid aluminium rod.
I had just got back from flying Young Eagles and was winding the gear up to park the Long when the handle come off in my hand!.
The tubing had sheared across the rivets to the winding handle. I only replaced that short piece with rod and about a month later it sheared at the universal joint going into the worm drive. I now have rod through the whole system.

I changed to Grove brakes after I had a Cleveland caliper crack and leak.
A new Cleveland Cylinder complete was $302.
A Grove 500x5 wheel and brake set was $494 for a pair.
You do the math, I bought the next set up the high performance with dual piston calipers, best mod. I have ever done to the LongEZ.
There is still the problem of Nyla-Flow/Nyla- seal brake lines.
Nylon eventually age/heat hardens and the lines to the calipers will fail.
I have made up a Srataflex mod. kit to replace the nylon lines to the brakes cylinders without having to modify the gear legs.

If you keep the Long well waxed I found a wet rag as soon as you land works as good as anything, don't let them dry out.

Dave it's not true I fly every day to nowhere, I have the best knowledge of airport resturants in N. California. I know you are jealous of my flight time, 380 hrs in 2.5 years but that is one of the advantages of retirement.
You also have that lousy weather in Oregon, you need to move to sunny California and we can go check out some of my favorite resturants.

I feel I have the right set up for a LongEz flyer on a budget.
I started with a Garmin 196 which I traded for a 296, I have that on a bracket above the speed brake about 12in. from my tired old eyes.
In the panel I have an Appollo GX 55 which was plug and play for the Appollo Loran which I never did get to work..I think it was me.
For the GIB I bought a Garmin Pilot 3 from E-Bay. It has an HSI display and it keeps the GIB from saying "are we there yet"" and pilot friends brave enough to fly with me really enjoy flying from the back seat.
I have the Pilot 3 velcro'd on a knee pad and connected to power so batteries are never a problem.The Garmin 296 is a great GPS and updates are easy to download from the Garmin web site.
The 296 also interfaces to my EI fuel computer giving me real time fuel to destination/waypoint and fuel left when you get there.It also gives miles/gall, nautical and statute.With 3 active GPS I'll never get lost....right?

It sounds convincing to me. I have a friend that has had constant trouble with his CDI system. A longer duration spark will give better burning. I ran an Electroair, the original Jeff Rose version and it ran fine.
I didn't want to go all Electronic and I was due a Mag. change so I bought a P-Mag. 3 P-mags later I went back to 2 Slicks. I am now in the process of fitting a new Electroair. Now I know why we are called Experimental Aircraft Fliers.
