Hangar Flying / Viton O-rings in Clevelands?
« on: January 29, 2009, 09:54:14 AM »
I'm considering replacing the standard Buna-N O-rings in my brake calipers with Viton. Canard brakes get very hot and Viton is superior in heat tolerance. Is anybody already using Viton O-rings with their Clevelands (30-9)?

Hangar Flying / Heavy Hand?
« on: June 04, 2008, 09:59:45 AM »
I've been flying my LongEz more and more recently and occassionally noticed it having a tendency to bank left more often than not. At first I thought it was a trim problem. However, when I level the plane and let go of the stick, it seems to fly level until some air bump upsets it. Then it goes either left or right.   I've been paying more attention to this lately  and it seems that my wrist simply wants to rest on the stick pushing it left a bit as I relax. It seems a heavy hand is the culprit. I wonder if other pilots, have noticed this happening to them?

For Sale/Wanted / Terra TRT250 transponder for sale
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:30:39 AM »
Excellent condition transponder with tray and FAA req'd Mod 5 AD done.
I purchased this transponder a year ago from Ebay. The project fell
through so I never installed it nor tested it, but was sold to me "in
perfect working condition". The unit has an "Authorization for Return
to Service" tag from Terra Corporation dated May 22,1995. I payed a
lot for this unit ($670) because it is one of the few of the type that is
legal to use because it had the Mod 5 AD done.  If someone is interested, please PM me. The great benefit of these TRT250 units is that they are very compact and lightweight, like the Microair or Becker units. Perfect for the cramped panel of a VFR Long or Vari.

Hangar Flying / Lycoming engine overhaul after 12 yrs?
« on: May 10, 2007, 04:52:43 PM »
You may or may not know that Lycoming specifies engine overhaul after 12 yrs, whether it has been used or not. I've personally seen several canards for sale with low time engines, but last overhauled over 12 years ago. The engines seem to be running fine, but does anyone really overhaul an engine just because it is over 12 yrs old? It would seem to me that with good compressions, minor if any oil leaks, and routine oil analysis, why not have confidence in the engine? Any experiences out there with this issue?

Hangar Flying / Two Vari-Ezes on eBay
« on: November 08, 2006, 07:56:52 AM »
Any body know any info about either of the two planes now on eBay? Both owners have lost their medicals. One is painted red which Rutan routinely advised not to do. Any scuttlebut?

Hangar Flying / Looking for Les Porter?
« on: May 04, 2006, 09:23:08 AM »
I'm trying to get in touch with a former LongEz builder named Les Porter in Tucson, AZ. His number is not listed, and I've lost his info. Anyone know how I can contact him?

Hangar Flying / Weight of GU vs Roncz canard
« on: April 23, 2006, 12:17:12 PM »
Does anyone know what the nominal weight difference is between the two canards? In addition to mitigating the rain effects, does the Roncz also save somne weight?

Hangar Flying / LongEz cover
« on: April 05, 2006, 06:58:35 AM »
A full set of fuselage, wing, canard, engine prop covers costs $1,700 in Sunbrella. Beautiful workmanship and durability, but ouch. I'm thinking I could have them made locally for a lot less.

Has anyone made their own covers? I know it depends on how you panelize the covers, but how much yardage would it take for a full set?

Hangar Flying / Automotive Electronic Ignitions on Lycomings?
« on: April 05, 2006, 06:50:45 AM »
About a year ago there was mention of using an automobile electronic ignition system from Electromotive Inc. in canards. I believe it was an HPV-1 model, and a bunch of southern CA flyers worked it out.

The prices of these automotive units are far less than the Lightspeed and Electroair/Rose systems. The capabilities seem the same and direct crank sensors are available. Granted these auto units are not as turnkey as the aviation units, but, for discussion purposes...why not use these on our planes?

Hangar Flying / Best prop for O-235L2C-LongEz
« on: November 21, 2005, 12:12:49 PM »
From what I gathered from a very interesting engine/rpm discussion a while back in this forum, there was a person (Carolyn AKA Ez Oz?) that had fine tuned their prop to develop 2700RPM and 161Kts@ 8500' full throttle. The prop was something like a Henry 60" dia. x68-71 pitch...it wasn't real clear from the description.

Lately, the consensus seems to be that a Hertzler Silver Bullet is one of the finest props around today. Can anyone report there numbers with their props? Is 2650RPM and 158Kts @ 8500' commonly achievable?

dia.x pitch- static RPM- Cruise RPM- Cruise Kts @ altitude.

Hangar Flying / LEZ Basic Empty Weight
« on: November 08, 2005, 10:28:14 PM »
I've come across a good looking LongEz with a basic IFR panel and O-235L2C. I'ld love to buy it, but I'm a little leary of its Basic Empty weight. The certification plaque says 953, but I think I saw something in a weight & balance calculation saying it was more like 980 pounds. My intuition is that I willl be flying with a noticeable penalty in range, payload capacity, flying speed, and/or "stallling" speed.

So this is a judgement call...is it prudent to buy a nicely built plane that is on the heavy side or would I be better off finding something, even if less nicely finished, weighing between a more normal 830 to 875 pounds (for an L2C)? I know there is no clear answer to this issue, but comments would be appreciated.
