Title: Exhaust pipes inside the cowl

Hey guys, Does anybody have plans or even pictures of an exhaust set that goes through the rear baffle ? I'd like to try to build my own exhaust set rather than dropping the $700.00 Mr. Hunt wants for his set. I've seen many EZ's at EAA with the exhaust out the cowl but I'd like to see how they get TO the baffle, ( forward of the baffle ). I can't figure how they get past the intake and the oil return lines, etc. Unless they go under all that but then I don't think they'd fit inside the cowl.

I built 2 sets of 4-out-the-cowl exhausts for my Defiant (first ones were exiting too low, got the prop too hot.) I bought some 180's and 90's in stainless tubing from Aircraft Spruce, then used an abrasive cutoff blade in a miter saw. Then just cut and fit sections. Tack weld as you go. I don't weld, so used a local pro. Took many trips back and forth until they all were done and fit together as a group. Then he finish welded them all. Charged me a whopping $75 for one whole exhaust system. The Defiant cowl is deep, so I was able to run the pipes down and out and back up. I think the longEZ and VariEZE cowl shape calls for pipes to move outboard first, then back to exit the rear baffle. Then they bend inward some.

Thanks for your responses guys. Good info on parts from Spruce etc. That helps, . . .but what I'd really like to see is if anyone has some pics ( from the bottom looking up ) of how the pipes go / flow. Drew I saw your pics, but can only see from the rear, nothing from the bottom w/o the cowl on. BTW, what are you asking for your bird ?

I spent the money and ordered Hal Hunt pipes in July. I'll get some pics as soon as they arrive!

I had to go back to my webpage to see what you were talking about. If you look at the right hand picture (upper cowl off, lower cowl on, looking directly from the rear), you will see the bottom edge of the rear baffle---it is a straight edge that passes above all the pipes. Other than the curvy pieces that wrap around the cylinders, there is nothing else below that line. It is all open space. This is why downdraft is so easy to baffle.
I need to update my webpage with all my Cozy stuff. The Longez was sold well over a year ago to a Navy Doc in Biloxi. Not that long afterward, Katrina hit. The airplane was in a large hangar at Stennis Airport. The hangar flooded with salt water, the airplane floated, and when the water receded, it came to rest on its tail. Insurance company totalled it.
It had a very powerful O320 on it with very little hours. Unlike my Cozy, it did not have electronic ignition and fuel injection.

Ouch. Your still the only EZ I have flown form on. Least it took a damn Katrina storm to total it out.
Am still trucking in the damn sandbox. It does get a tad to exciting.

Jack, Let me know when you are back so we can go flying. I will probably stop flying after Thanksgiving---then start back in March.
