Title: canopy replacement

does anyone know if there is any info for replacing canopy I have the old canopy out and frame sanded. would like to know how many layers of bid to secure new canopy. also any tips about keeping epoxy off new canopy where bid is layed up next to peel plastic. thanks for any input the Rebel. :lol:

I'll leave the layers of bid question up to those in the know. I can tell you however to search the net for the RV builders sites that have great info on prep of the plastic for creating a great bond line .... layers of tapes of different colors, etc. I would also question some of the composite gurus about the possibility of drilling into the canopy edges to make "flox rivet" holes; sounds good in theory to me, and I wonder of it is a practice?? I have assisted on some RV canopies, and they are mechanicaly fastened along with the glass to canopy to metal junction.

there are a few techniques..but the flox rivet holes.. will make the best bond.. its like bonding and riveting..all at once. :)

I had to replace my canopy after an unfortunate accident during building, when the gas strut failed and the canopy continued around to smash against the side of the fuselage. The job wasnt as bad as I expected, cut the inside layups to release the plastic, popped out the window, roughed up the edge of the new one where it would be encapsulated in glass. I used clecoes and flox to secure it to the frame. Layed up 2 layers of bid over the inside to finish. I used duct tape to protect the plastic from epoxy.

thanks for info hav frame all ready for new canopy epoxy & bid on the way can't wait to get back in the air but I guess it would be a little breezy with no canopy so guess I'll have to wait. :lol:
