Thanks. The 149NL is high torque.

Hangar Flying / Fitting a Skytecair 149 NL inline starter
« on: November 15, 2013, 10:09:19 AM »
I am planning on fitting a  Sky-tec 149 NL starter in a Long Ez and am seeking reassurance that the inline starter will fit without interfering with anything e.g. Sump, air intakes, exhaust etc and wonder if you are aware of any problems in this regard.  Anyone out there using one of these starters.

Now I am fully aware of the debate regarding B&C vs SKY-tec (the pros and cons of one vs the other in regard to kickback - which seems to really come down to a mag timing problem),  so really only interested in whether anyone had any problems fitting the 149NL in terms of interference with the items mentioned above or indeed any other components that I haven't thought of.

Regards,

Kevin

Thanks.  Did you use 2" pulleys at this location too?

Hangar Flying / Rudder cable runs - ADVICE needed please
« on: November 11, 2013, 01:24:55 PM »
I am installing the nose mounted brake cylinder assembly as per Bob Davenports blueprints and MY QUESTION IS:  Does everybody who installed nose mounted brake cyclinders continue to use the CS 15 belcranks and CS71 belcrank brackets on the firewall or is there an alternative method of running the rudder cables.  I note Debbie Iwatate advocates retaining the CS15/CS71 set-up.  I have high performance rudders and flush rudder belhorns with CS springs at the pedals.

Essentially what I'm trying to figure is if there is any way to run the rudder cable from the brake pedal/spring IN ONE CONTINUOUS RUN up to and round the AN210-2 pulley/CS72 assembly to the quick disconnects aft of the spar  ---  Long Ez plans page 16-8  ---  (e.g.  using a bowden cable through the firewall to just short of the pulleys) or are the CS 15/CS71 essential??????

Regards and thanks,

Hangar Flying / Re: Bendix Scintilla Mag query
« on: October 30, 2013, 03:43:16 AM »
Thanks Mike.   According to Lycoming (based on case number) engine started out as a straight 0-320 and was sold to Piper in 1957.  This was before Lycoming introduced suffixes.  That model subsequently became designated as an 0-320 A1A, narrow deck engine.  It was involved in an accident and eventually ended up in the hands of Frank Hoffman in Canada who bought it as a core and whose background I thoroughly checked before buying it - (lecturer in aeronautics in John Abbott university, Montrael; EAA Technical Councellor; Member of Canadas AOPA; representative of the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA) to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).  He had the engine rebuilt by Canadian Aero to zero tolerances before I bought it from him.   The mounting lugs were modified to fit a Dynafocal mount (this was done before he bought it) and an E2D oil pan was fitted as original was damaged.

As regards the mag, I'm afraid I just slipped it off as carefully as I could taking as much care as possible to avoid moving any of the gears and replaced it immediately so am afraid I can't remember the detail.  I guess I'll just have to pull it off and have another look.  In any event thanks for the detail.  It is most useful.

Kevin.

STOP!

Have you considered how you will get the wiring out to the nav. lights?  You have to unplug them
somewhere when you take the wings off.   Also you have to put the strobe system somewhere.
Where will you put yours?  Farther from the radio may mean less RF interference.

People that make changes in the plans always end up with a mess.  I know that because I
made some small changes.   Not good.

Bruce Hughes   :)

I don't understand your confusion, Bruce.    Nav/Strobe combo (Rob Rollinson's brilliant micro-burst system) goes on wing tip.  Wiring and antenna cables run through the interior of the spar, neither of which interfere with the fuel tank.  And of course I installed a small multi-plug on the wiring system at the join between the spar and the wing, but I fail to see what you are driving at as my query related to fuel tank and brake system.

Hangar Flying / Bendix Scintilla Mag query
« on: October 28, 2013, 04:46:42 AM »
I have two Bendix Scintilla mags on my engine - a straight 0-320 originally built in 1957 and sold to Piper.  Engine was rebuilt by Canadian Aero for the vendor from whom I purchased it.

Right mag is S4LN -20 (part #10-51360-29); Left is S4LN-21 (part #10-51360-37).

Recently when I installing a vacuum pump I loosened the nuts on the right mag to give me a little more room to work and of course damaged the gasket.  I got a new one and installed it after carefully removing and replaced the mag.  Now I read that removal, of mag should only be done by an A&P and that great care is required to avoid dislodging "rubber cushions"!!! Which can apparantly fall down into the accessory case or into the sump.   I never noticed these things and wonder if I missed them.  I'm now reluctant to touch it again unless I really, really, have to, in case (a) I got lucky and didn't disturb them or (b) end up losing them if I open it up again.  If I remove the sump and they're not there then I'm worried I may have to remove the accessory case to find there were none fitted in the first instance.

I also get the impression from some fora that not all engines require these rubber cushions but don't know which - apart from two versions of 0-360 specifically mentioned in dispatches.  I've downloaded the Bendix manual from the Aeronca site and gone through it carefully examining the exploded view and parts list in detail but can find no reference to these rubber cushions.

Can anyone HELP???

Regards

Kevin

Gentlemen,  Your responses are much appreciated  and all very useful.  I'm going to extend tank capacity to BL55.  Thanks.  I estimate I can get an extra 3 US gals per side (2.5 Imperial).

Hangar Flying / Three Ez questions
« on: October 24, 2013, 02:58:57 AM »
Q.1.    The Long Ez plans show the outer rib of the fuel tank at BL 45 and the remaining section of the strake is then faired to mate with the wing.  I used Task strake leading edges and baffles/ribs and got a real good match with the wing.  Before fitting the wing top I wish to enquire if anyone ever considered extending the fuel tank out to the end rib (c. BL 55).  Is this acceptable Or is there a prohibition on this?  Would this have a negative effect on centre of gravity?

Q.2.    Way back a long time ago there was an article in either CP or CSA newsletter about using -3 aluminium tubing in the brake lines in place of nylaflow tubing.  Since then I have never seen anything about the success or otherwise of the -3 aluminium tubing.  Has anyone tried this?  Was it successful?  Is -3 tubing large enough?

Q.3.   I have original brake discs (single puck) on 500/5 wheels.  Can I fit double puck brake discs on these wheels?  Can anyone provide the reference number and source please.

Thank you in anticipation,

Kevin

Hangar Flying / What airfilter for an 0-320
« on: August 17, 2013, 07:26:48 AM »
I've been advised that best airfilter for a Long Ez is a K&N E-3322.  This filter is 6.25" outside diameter by 2.5" high.  That advise came from a person using a Lycoming 0-235.  I'm planning on an 0-320 and having read airfilter facts on the K&N website figure I need a bigger filter - possibly 6.25" X 3" high or 7" X 2.75" high.

Any advice from someone flying an 0-320?  What works best on an 0-320?

Dunno if you got satisfactory solution to your question.  Just came across this thread now.  Check out the article on page 29 of the Central States Association newsletter #72.  Raise the axles 2.5 inches if using the 500x5 tires.  Hope this helps.  Am still building too and completed this mod last year.

Kevin
