Hangar Flying / a partiularly horrible flying season

You right, this has been the worst spat of canard accidents I can remember.

It happens at times. At least two of the canards involved form flying.  Then you had the Rotax powered one go in and now the latest one, but he survived.

If it ain't in the plans, I wouldn't add it. But I would ensure my bird is well inspected and marginal parts replaced.

We have lost several 737s this year. Would you stop flying on those??

Camarillo (CMA) just up the 101 from the Valley about 40 miles has more than a few EZs and knockoffs.  You ain't that far from Mojave either to check up there too.

What to you use for "Best Glide Speed" in your long ez?... I am rededicating myself to engine out practice...

I generally used 70 KIAS and the engine turned off at 10,000' AGL over a good size airport. With the prop stopped you pick up 15% less VSI. I did it both at idle and engine off.  Since I am in the middle of freaking Iraq right now. I don't have my data base. Dim memory recalls about 800' FPM or so down.  With the last couple of thousand feet far less VSI. Air is far thicker there.

Note, to kill the motor at that height, you need to kill the mags/electronic ignition.  Then setup for a relight when you need it. In my case, at about 110KIAS the prop started turning. Basically I buried the nose till the prop started moving for a smooth relight at idle. Let the temps build up and slowly throttled up.  My hard deck was 5,000' AGL for a relight.

If my freaking GPS was working, would had gotten the actual distance.

I have a few hours behind me and am a former Navy maintenance check pilot.  If you perform the above, ensure you have all of your ducks in a row lined up. It gets real quiet up there.

I a stuck wondering what happened. I would like to make some sense of what happened to this very accomplished pilot... i am sure that we all would.

with gratitude,

Dave

I enjoyed his postings also, along with his wisdom.  Having been flying since 1973 with the Navy then.  Now mainly homebuilt flying.  You try to learn from every crash and try to avoid making the same mistakes.  Always keep your SA and when your close to the ground, gotta be real careful.

While upside down and waiting he realized that if he had a punch to break the plastic, he could have crawled out himself. Since then, he has carried a punch. So have I in little bag..

I wear a survival vest that is stocked witih goodies, including my trusty knife that will either punch through the canopy or slice it.  It's my old Navy survival vest, that has pouches for my handheld radio and water bottle also.  It weighs in around 10 pounds, IMO pretty cheap insurance if you are forced down in  terrain out in the boondocks.

hello all,
i am having abnormal readings on my EGT ..and i already have changed to new probes..
   im suspecting the carburator..(

Need more data. Are you leaning?  EGT numbers can change with ambient conditions and altitude.

These carbs are pretty basic.  How do your exhaust stacks look after a flight?  Upon shutdown, with idle cutoff, do your Rs go up or down??

I normally find most folks aren't leaning properly.

Hangar Flying / AnyEZ drivers in my area?

Drew,
What could I expect as far as drive time to get to your airport from pentagon? I don't have a good feel for traffic in the area so I do not know how much time to buffer into my schedule.

Sunday shouldn't be too bad. Hit www.airnav.com  then hit the airports and input "CJR".  Should be able to mapquest the route.

Yeah, weather permitting I can slide in there before 1500. Gives me a chance to check his other wing off.  With any luck that replica Mustang will be up. That puppy has a really noisy motor.

I will probably launch around noon or a tad earlier.  Beats the hell out of driving for sure.

It's been too damn frozen for me to fly.

I am looking for any EZ owners in my area that would be willing to allow me to take a look at their aircraft. The itch is getting unbearable now that I am almost finished with my
KROA

If you ever get close to FDK, drop me an email and we can probably hook up. Am guessing ROA is Roanke, VA. Lil South of me.

I know of one EZ, South of me with at least one wing off for winter upgrades. Will let him chime in. But if you get a shot, you will see the wing structure and wing beam up close and personal. Let alone a real robust O-320 motor.
