Hangar Flying / Paint on the VE
« on: May 29, 2007, 11:13:54 PM »
Two comments :

1)  Don't forget to keep all dark colors to the underside.  Burt was pretty specific about the heat generated by dark colors and the resulting damage to the fiberglass structure.  I would think this would be especially woesome in Texas ! !

2) BTW, . . .I didn't know they had grass in Texas.  I thought it was all tumbleweeds ! !

Looking for a used, . .(run - out or not),  O - 320  or  possibly an  IO - 320  for sale for my Long - EZ.

Some say I'll want more ponies than the O - 235 can offer.

If you know where I can find one that won't break the bank, . . .Lemme know ! !

What's the point in posting things if you aren't going to respond or monitor the forum ? ? ?

Hangar Flying / How Mine's coming
« on: May 13, 2007, 12:04:47 AM »
My EZ, . .did fly one day, . .but I was very worried about getting back on the ground in one piece.  That was 18 months ago.  I too build a new panel, . .( but not 3 of them )  Actually 4 or 5 but only one went into the plane.  I am quite happy with how it all came together with the exception of not having a turn coordinator.

After months of head scratchin' and plaguing people for info, . .I finally have my radios and antennas installed and WORKING  ! !   That was such a relief to see ! !   Now I'm wrapping up all the loose wiring and am headed to so many more projects.  I was hoping to be airborne this summer, . .but it looks like a long shot.   I hate it when people ask me when I'll be done.  I have absolutely no way of knowing ! !

For a while there, . . it seemed like being on a treadmill going nowhere.  There was so much to do and I couldn't see any progress even though I was working on it quite a bit.  But now, . .I see things done and I know  (from other projects I've done )  eventually, . .it will be done ! !

Hangar Flying / Old Long

Better check the engine, . .

Could be older than  12 years ! !

The body doesn't look too bad.  If the paint is coming off like that, . .perhaps he didn't get a good bond.  Maybe something between the paint and body.

Hangar Flying / ELT antenna
« on: May 09, 2007, 12:40:03 AM »
Thanks guys,

Yeah . .  Joe, . .

That's about what I'd heard about the  ELT's .    About as effective as a visual search.   You gotta comb  an area of about a square mile or more back and forth until you find your target.

Thanks for the suggestions.   I'll figure somethin' out.

How tough is it to make an  ELT  antenna ?

My  AMK - 450 unit  ( that's the one that has the replaceable duracel batteries ) still has the BNC connector on it but there's no wire antenna coming from it.

I checked on ordering a new one.  It can be had . . .but for $ 51.00.  Seems a little steep for what I think is just a wire.  12 "  or  24 " long.

Hangar Flying / Downdraft cooling
« on: May 07, 2007, 12:22:47 AM »
Many builders have tried other locations for the oil cooler.  Some use the pressure from the underside of the strake to enter (naca ? ) and then pass through the oil cooler and just dump into the lower cowl.   When I bought mine, . .the oil cooler was mounted above the engine up in front and incoming air from the main naca was diverted up the forward side of the engine.  Then there was this large wedge shaped ( almost a reverse naca ) void built into the upper cowl.   The idea was to have the laminar flow suck air through the oil cooler.  I don't really know how well that system worked, . .but I took it off right away ! !

I'll see if I can attach some pics.

Hangar Flying / Oil Heat
« on: May 06, 2007, 12:37:56 AM »
Ezguy,

I went to the junk yard and got a heater switch from a car. This works fine as long as you remember to get the resistors that go with the switch.  You must have the resistors.  All the switch does is select different paths for the power.  The reisistors actually slow the motor down.  I got one with three different levels of resistance so, . .with full high and off, . .I have 5 speeds.

Glennbob.

P. S.  Like Waiter said, . .you gotta watch the resistors. They get hot.  So . .like he said, . it's a good idea to put the resistors some place where they can be cooled like in the blower intake ! !

Thanks for all the pointers.

Agreed, . . if the engine were cooling well . . .why would anyone try it ?  It's because many of us have problems cooling these things.  I'm up over 400 degrees before I can get to the runway for take - off ! !

I think you're trying to make a silk purse from the proverbial sow's ear with the dip stick tube, not to mention the problems with making the new one accurate.  I think I'll just find me a way to get to the stock one.

One side note.  You might want to proof read your post before sending. Quite difficult to read without proper punctuation.

Thanks for your input !

Hangar Flying / IO-320 Fuel injection
« on: May 04, 2007, 11:38:28 PM »
Waiter,

Your info should be more current than mine then.  You should have a better idea exactly what it costs.

The fuel injection fuel pumps ( I think ) deliver somewhere in the area of 25 pounds of pressure, . .while the carb pumps only deliver about 4 or 5 pounds.  That's why you need different pumps for F. I.

If you call Airflow Performance Inc.,  ( 864-576-4512 ),  they'll have that info for you.  I'm sure they'd share it with you.  They sent me a bunch of info on that but there are so many variables depending on your  SPECIFIC  application.  They have part numbers and price sheets for each pump.

Actually, . . I think the airflow system sells for about $2,400.00.  I was thinking about it,  but plan to do it down the road.
