For Sale/Wanted / E-racer Spar for sale $750

E-racer spar, constructed as per plans but with two modifications:

1. Bottom of the spar is straight like a Long-EZ / Cozy 3 spar, with no dropped center section to accommodate the driveshaft arrangement that was part of the original V8 E-racer's powertrain. If you plan to hang an aircraft engine on the firewall (like most do) then why do you need that dropped section anyway?

2. Spar is entirely constructed with Divinycell foam core (not that Urethane crap), and Pro-Set epoxy resin.

This spar could also be used for a Long-EZ, if you build wings to match. That means building wings using the E-racer layup schedule (25% thicker spar caps & (IIRC) 1 more full length ply in the shear web). This is what gives the E-racer it's 300 mph VNE vs the Long-EZ's 220 mph. This would also require strake skins that are 2" longer as this spar is 2" narrower than Long-EZ...and would give some added fuel capacity in the tanks

No longer needed; bought 4 ea 10 x 20 x 96 Dow Flotation Billets for $573 from my local lumberyard.  I picked them up with my cargo trailer 10 minutes from home.  I got 43% more foam than if I had ordered one wing's worth from Spruce... which would have cost $1107 with shipping.

I'd called Dow and asked where I could find this product near me.  They gave me a regional distributor, with whom I then had my lumberyard place an order.  Had the foam the next day.

And yeah, it's the same stuff.

Today we hotwired the cores for the port wing, and have one whole log + 40% of another leftover to use for winglets. (we need two pair)

Just got a phone call from Vince at Advanced Composite Traders. He was checking to see if I needed any more BID. Which I don't, but some of you guys might. 2.93 was the price he quoted me for Hexcell 38" 7725 - the same stuff Wicks & Spruce sell for around 7 bucks. Shipping costs are reasonable too.

I would like to join the CSA.  I am currently a long way from home, have no access to a post office or stamps, have no checks (does anybody even use those anymore?), and so no way to pay and join this organization.  Until I get back home in about 5 weeks, and then I'll be so busy that I won't think of it.  Even then, I'd have to drive into town and buy a money order, then go to the post office to mail it.  What a pain.  Shouldn't there be an easier way?  I mean, c'mon...its 2012 here.

Here's a suggestion:  If there was a Paypal account to which membership dues could be sent, this would be SO much easier.  Money can be sent thru Paypal as a "gift" and there are no fees charged... but I'd even be willing to pay extra to cover the fees just to join the club and avoid the inconveniences.

If I can buy hundreds of dollars worth of airplane crap and have it shipped to my house while I'm out in the middle of the ocean, it seems like there should be a similar way to spend 35 bucks to join the airplane club.

I have arranged group pricing on Pro-Set Epoxy from Fisheries Supply in Seattle.  They ship UPS and so far I have not seen any hazmat charges.  Prices are as follows:

125 Resin:  .98 gal = $87
             4.29 gal = $324

226 (med) or 229 (slow) hardener:  0.33 gal = $48
                                                1.43 gal = $154

Cost per gallon for the 1.3 gal kit is $102/gal.  The 5.72 gal kit is $84/gal.  WA residents add 9% sales tax.

To obtain this group pricing, call Kathy Hayden at Fisheries Supply 800 426 6930.  Mention the "Canard Builder's Association", Acct # 633777.  Ask to set up your own "cash" acct, which will be linked to the aforementioned account number and get Association pricing.

FYI - this discount pricing is good for anything in the Fisheries Supply catalog.  They carry an extensive inventory of marine parts and supplies.

New these things are $1366 at Spruce, plus another $100 for the axles.

Also, I would very much be interested in finding the couple you mention that build one in two years, with a Honda Power plant.  Anyone on here got contact info for them?  They live in Arizona I think.  Search Youtube for Long-EZ Aquatrax for a vid or two.  Maybe contact thru Youtube.

Congrats on your building, I checked out your page.  Very impressive.  Thanks, but the proof will be in the pudding, as they say.

I am new to composite building, so i'm looking forward to diving in.  I just plan to do what i did when i decided to fly.  When the time is right soon, just dive in and don't think, just do.  I did my private in 2 months, and passed my checkride at 41 hours  I don't think i'd be able to replicate efficiency building a long! but i want to avoid dinkering, and "dorking" around.  Plan the build, build the plane.  Ok, that said; be meticulous and get everything as exact as you can. At the end of the day you want to end up with a good final product.

I plan to build a LongEz to as close to plans as possible.  I DO NOT want to over think the project too much.  Plans built, 0-235, with simple day/night VFR, EFIS electronic panel, and get in the air and plan some "see the world" cross countries.  Building it 4" wider was a cinch...I wouldn't even think about NOT doing that.  You must add the same into the center section of the spar as well.  It will take no extra time or head scratching.  Todd can make you a wider canopy - thats no problem.  He probably still has the tooling for mine. 

More engine power will make your plane more useful and allow you fly out of more places.  Most everybody uses 320's now - 150hp at least.

There ya go - now git to it.
