Waiter I finally gave up too.  It got to the point that I was logging on every half hour and deleting 4-5.

Hangar Flying / Looking for a Flight Sim and Long EZ pilot

That is remarkable.  I was fooled at first and wondered why you put actual photos up on the site rather than the renderings.  Very nice.  And I recognize Bill Allen's airplane.

I use X-Plane and have both a Defiant and a Long EZ which both seem to be very accurate simulations.  Plus the planes are free.

Join the Defiant Flyers Yahoo group, the address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/defiantflyers/.  Post a message there and you will probably get some recommendations!

Charles - What is the price for the system?  Looked on their website but couldnt find a price, other than a reference to "competitive with the price of a carburetor".

Hangar Flying / Internet explorer use on Forum

I'm hoping someone out there knows enough about IE7 to answer this one.  I cannot log onto this site with any of my computers running Internet Explorer 7.  With Firefox, I get right in.  I have checked security settings etc., and cannot find anything obvious.  Any ideas?  Is anyone else seeing this problem?

Buy a micromesh kit from aircraft spruce.  Works very well.

Hangar Flying / Leaning
« on: February 27, 2007, 08:28:48 AM »
Actually I have not tried it at WOT.  My current props (Prince) run up to near 2900 and it gets noisy and vibration is an issue.  I have new Hertzler props coming, which hopefully will allow for WOT operation.  I'll definitely experiment with that.

Hangar Flying / Leaning
« on: February 24, 2007, 09:31:03 AM »
Not to raise an old standby issue, but I would like to hear from others what their S.O.P. is with engine leaning.  My airplane has 0-320's, carbureted.  I would love to run lean of peak, but can't seem to get there without significant engine roughness.  Using the VM1000 monitors, many times I get a really rough engine before the monitor indicates a cylinder peaking.  Really bad fuel distribution apparently.  I have given thought to changing my airbox configuration, etc., to see if I could improve this.  I don't use a ramair type system, I have inlet filters inside the cowls near the firewalls, with scat tubing to the airboxes, typical Rutan plans type induction.  My airboxes came off the Apache that the engines came from, with the flow vanes which divide the 4 quadrants.  Are most of you guys able to go LOP without roughness?

A local EZ flyer also experienced binding with the Aerocarb.  Doesnt sound like it's ready for prime time yet.

Hangar Flying / Exhaust pipes inside the cowl
« on: October 10, 2006, 04:25:03 PM »
I built 2 sets of 4-out-the-cowl exhausts for my Defiant (first ones were exiting too low, got the prop too hot.)  I bought some 180's and 90's in stainless tubing from Aircraft Spruce, then used an abrasive cutoff blade in a miter saw.  Then just cut and fit sections.  Tack weld as you go.  I don't weld, so used a local pro.  Took many trips back and forth until they all were done and fit together as a group.  Then he finish welded them all.  Charged me a whopping $75 for one whole exhaust system.  The Defiant cowl is deep, so I was able to run the pipes down and out and back up.  I think the longEZ and VariEZE cowl shape calls for pipes to move outboard first, then back to exit the rear baffle.  Then they bend inward some.

Dave, I use the Surecheck VRX (former Xaon) and really like it.  It seems to be very accurate, and really gives me more piece of mind when travelling.  Actually the real appeal for me is when it shows "no" traffic.  I can relax just a little.  The VRX will track up to, I think, 5 targets.  I have it piped into the intercom so a nice lady talks to me when a target starts getting close.  Only problem I have with it is space.  I have run out on the panel so had to bracket it off to the side.  I mounted an antenna under the pilots seat.

Hangar Flying / canopy replacement
« on: September 23, 2006, 08:48:02 AM »
I had to replace my canopy after an unfortunate accident during building, when the gas strut failed and the canopy continued around to smash against the side of the fuselage.  The job wasnt as bad as I expected, cut the inside layups to release the plastic, popped out the window, roughed up the edge of the new one where it would be encapsulated in glass.  I used clecoes and flox  to secure it to the frame.  Layed up 2 layers of bid over the inside to finish.  I used duct tape to protect the plastic from epoxy.
